2020 3M Open leaderboard breakdown: Struggles for Brooks Koepka continue with missed cut after Round 2 - CBSSports.com

There weren't quite as many fireworks in Round 2 on Friday as there were in Round 1 on Thursday at the 3M Open. We still have plenty of interesting storylines going into the weekend at TPC Twin Cities, however, including what would be a monumental bounceback from somebody who melted a bit coming home last weekend at the Memorial.

Let's jump into the leaderboard for Round 2 and take a look at what to watch for in the third round.

T1. Richy Werenski, Michael Thompson (-12) -- The primary question I got on Friday was which (if any!) of these players had the most staying power. To me, it's Thompson for myriad reasons. He's had a solid career in which he's won before (2013 Honda Classic) and finished runner-up at a major (2012 U.S. Open). But even more than that, his statistical profile this week is one that is more sustainable. Yes, he's putting it out of his mind, but he's also striking the ball well, too. Werenski's 11 strokes gained are more the result of simply having a scorching putter. That's not as likely to last on Saturday and Sunday.

T3. Tony Finau, Talor Gooch (-11) -- Speaking of lasting on Saturday and Sunday ... Tony Finau has a big weekend on deck. Here are the facts: Of the big names still in the field at this tournament, Finau is playing (by far) the best golf. So what's rolling through the mind on Saturday and Sunday afternoon? What's in the well when you go to it late on each day? Finau getting rid of his caddie after last week tells me he knows something (something!) needs to change and that he needs to go grab a good win. So, that's promising. He might not do it in the end, but you'd still like to some fight from somebody who -- despite his outrageous talent -- sort of rolled over last weekend at Muirfield Village. He has 33 top-10 finishes over the last four years and zero wins. Time to go get one against a field you should beat.

T6. Cameron Davis, Matthew Wolff (-9) -- Wolff's tee-to-green game faded a bit on Friday, but I doubt that happens two days in a row. He was buoyed by a great putter in Round 2, which could be his salvation this week when he looks back on how he constructed a four-round run at repeating his first win on Tour. This event needs a bit of juice, and Wolff will be happy to oblige on Saturday and Sunday. He could become the youngest player to win an event in two straight years in over a century.

MC. Brooks Koepka (-1) -- The four-time major winner looked miserable on Friday -- tossing clubs, working on his knee and generally having a no-good-very-bad time playing golf. It was painful to watch. He made a 38-foot birdie putt on Friday and still finished nearly last in putting for the week. There are some issues to work out before he plays for his third straight PGA Championship here in two weeks, and I'm not sure simply playing more golf at next week's WGC event in Memphis is going to help solve those issues. This is his second missed cut in his last three events.

MC. Tommy Fleetwood (+1) --  It's been a disappointing re-entry to the Tour for Fleetwood who, in a very off-brand move for him, lost strokes to the field on both Thursday and Friday with his approach shots. It's easy to explain this away as knocking the rust off but, remember, before the Tour paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Fleetwood missed the cut (badly) at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and shot 78 in Round 1 of the Players Championship. His golf has been subpar in three straight tournaments.
