Latest updates:

11:32 a.m. Even if a COVID-19 vaccine is available next month, it likely won’t be widely available in Texas until at least July, reports the Texas Tribune.

Health care workers, vulnerable populations, older people and those with underlying conditions would be first in line, according to state officials.

11 a.m. One of the country’s largest COVID-19 antibody surveys has launched in Texas, Todd Ackerman reports.

UTHealth and the state health department are hoping to enroll 100,000 people to figure out the proportion of people in the state who have been impacted by the virus. They hope to be able to find patterns by January.

10:52 a.m. Coronavirus has cost the oil and gas industry 107,000 jobs — and more layoffs are coming later this year. So the Texas Oil and Gas Association has set up an online career center where people can submit their resumes for a free review and evaluation. More details from the Chronicle’s Paul Takahashi.

10:35 a.m. Looking for something new on your (socially distanced, outdoor) outings? Buffalo Bayou Park has new sculptures for its fifth anniversary by Cuban-American artist Carmen Herrera. Herrera was largely ignored until she was 90 — and is still working today at age 105. Molly Glentzer has the details (and check out the installation photos from Elizabeth Conley).

10:19 a.m. Humble ISD has 95 active COVID-19 cases, and 68 are clustered in the district’s six high schools. (The other 23 cases are spread out between the district’s 29 elementary schools and nine middle schools.) For more, check out this story by Savannah Mehrtens.

10:10 a.m. Educators around the country are trying balance teaching in-person classes and teaching online — and it’s taking a toll on their mental health. Full story from NBC News.

9:48 a.m. Houston rapper and former City Council candidate Brad Jordan (a.k.a Scarface) is in search of a kidney after his battle with coronavirus. He’s being helped along by rapper T.I. and Congresswoman Maxine Waters. Andrew Dansby has more.

9:30 a.m. A 14-year-old girl from Frisco, Texas won a $25,000 prize for a discovery that could provide a coronavirus therapy. Anika Chebrolu told CNN that she'd initially focused on influenza, but changed course when COVID came.

"How I develop this molecule further with the help of virologists and drug development specialists will determine the success of these efforts," she said.

8:30 a.m. We're weeks away from the start of holiday spending season (Black Friday, anyone?), but a survey from consulting firm Deloitte found that Houston-area holiday spending will be down nearly 25 percent. Amanda Drane has the story.

8:10 a.m. Coronavirus aside, Texans have cast 4.1 million ballots so far. In Harris County, 4,127 18-year-olds have cast ballots (Yes, most of them were born in 2002. Yes, we are all old). Follow county politics reporter Zach Despart for regular voting updates.

7:50 a.m. Bellaire High School, an HISD school, will close Tuesday due to a COVID-19 case, according to a letter sent to the school community. An individual who tested positive for the coronavirus was on campus Monday, officials said. The infected person is self-isolating at home and HISD has launched a contact tracing investigation. Anyone believed to be a close contact of the infected person has been notified and must remain off-campus for a 14 day quarantine period, according to the letter.

Daily Elementary temporarily closed Monday due to a presumed COVID-19 case and Foerster Elementary temporarily closed Monday due to a confirmed case of COVID-19 on campus, HISD officials confirmed. Each school will be deep-cleaned and officials will notify families when it is safe for students to return to the classroom.

7:46 a.m. A woman from Garland, Texas died on a flight from Arizona to Texas, NBC-DFW reports. The woman, who was in her early 30s, died on July 25 on the jetway.

Numbers roundup, Oct. 19

Texas reported its highest number of COVID-related hospitalizations Monday since Aug. 28 with 4,319 patients, according to a Houston Chronicle analysis of state data.

Statewide there are 62,415 total staffed hospital beds and 13,289 beds available, including 1,128 ICU beds. There are 7,718 ventilators available.

Texas also saw an uptick of 3,769 cases, bringing the statewide total to 860,229. Another 15 deaths brings the state's fatality count to 17,403.

The new cases were higher than 53 percent of all other days in the pandemic, while new deaths were higher than 18 percent.

The state's rolling average for new cases is now at 5150.6.

The Houston region's case count is 213,782, up 689 from yesterday. Harris County added 398 cases today, 98 of which are older cases, and is at 154,765 cases total. There have been 3,635 deaths in the Houston region, up 1 from yesterday.

The positive test rate is now at 8.1 percent. The rolling average of viral tests is now at 61,807.
