Ice Chips:

  • The UConn Huskies will open the 2020-21 season with a home-and-home match-up with the No. 7 nationally ranked Massachusetts Minutemen.  The Huskies will be in Amherst on Friday night with the game available on NESNplus.  UConn will be back at home in Storrs on Saturday for an afternoon re-match with the Minutemen.
  • UConn will return to campus for the first time since the 2013-14 season as they play all their home games at the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum in Storrs.  UConn has called the XL Center in Hartford home since joining Hockey East in 2014-15.  Only two Hockey East schools have played games at Freitas in UMass Lowell and Merrimack.
  • The 2020-21 season will look very different with the COVID-19 pandemic causing plenty of changes in athletics.  The Huskies will play 20 league games this season in a double round robin format.  Six flex game have been added in that will not count in the standings and can be used as dates to make up games that are affected during the season.
  • UConn was supposed to open with two games at Vermont but the pandemic caused a postponement leading to this weekend's games with UMass.  Further details on make-up dates with UVM will be announced at a later date.
  • In the 2020-21 HEA Preseason Coaches' Poll, the Huskies were picked to finish seventh in this year's polling of the league's head coaches.  This will be the Huskies seventh season of play in Hockey East and in five of their first six seasons in the league, the Huskies have outplayed their preseason prediction.
  • The team has elected senior defenseman Adam Karashik team captain for this season.  Karashik served as an alternate captain last year.  Classmates Brian Rigali and Zac Robbins along with junior Carter Turnbull will serve as alternate captains.
  • The Huskies bring back 20 players from last year's team that finished 12-10-3 in the league.  UConn tied their best-finish in the standings coming in fifth and posted new program highs in conference wins (12) and points (26).
  • UConn returns six of its top-10 point producers from last season and top-goal scorers in junior Carter Turnbull and sophomore Vladislav Firstov, who had 12 and 10 goals, respectively.  UConn had their best offensive production in Hockey East last season, averaging 3.00 goals per game, tied for fourth in the league.  The Huskies were also third in the league in generating shots on goal at 32.35 per game.
  • Turnbull is coming off a break-out offensive season where he put up 24 points (12g/12a) in the, jumping up from his two goal, seven assist freshmen season.
  • Firstov became the third Husky in program history to earn Hockey East All-Rookie honors last year after posting 11 goals and 12 assists.  He ended the year tied for seventh among league rookies with 23 points on 11 goals and 12 assists.
  • Over the past two seasons, junior Jachym Kondelik has been the Huskies top-point producer, piling up 49 points (12g/37a) in 67 games played.  The tallest Husky on the roster, the 6-5 Kondelik doubled his goal output last year, finishing with eight goals.
  • Junior Jonny Evans enters his third season in Storrs as the Huskies leading career goal scorer having potted 17 in 49 career games.
  • Junior Marc Gatcomb had one goal in 31 games as a rookie but was a break-out star for UConn last year finishing with seven goals and five assists.
  • In net, junior Tomas Vomacka returns to backstop the Huskies.  Vomacka started 33 games, the most by a UConn goaltender since the 2014-15 season.  He had 15 wins, the seventh highest total in UConn hockey history for a single season.  He had a 3.13 goals against average with a .898 save percentage and his 910 total saves ranked fourth highest in Hockey East.
  • Defensively, Karashik will lead a unit that has plenty of depth and experience back this season.  The captain has played in 96 games since stepping on campus and has 147 career blocked shots. UConn will get a boost as well from the return of sophomore Roman Kinal who missed all of last season with injury.  He had a goal and six assists in 34 games in 2018-19.
  • The Husky lineup will feature eight NHL draft picks in 2020-21, a new program-high.  That number climbed by three last month as sophomore Yan Kuznetsov (Calgary/2nd Rd) and freshmen Artem Shlaine (New Jersey/5th Rd) and Nick Capone (Tampa Bay/6th Rd) heard their names called in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft.
