Veterans Day is a federal holiday observed annually on Nov. 11, honoring those who have served in the United States armed forces and those currently on active duty.

The federal holiday observed annually on Nov. 11 was formerly known as Armistice Day to mark the end of World War I. Major hostilities of World War I formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the Armistice with Germany went into effect.

In 1954, after the end of World War II and the Korean War, Congress voted to swap the word Armistice for Veterans, making Nov. 11 the day to honor all American veterans of war.

Americans typically pay tribute with parades, ceremonies, lectures, concerts and other events. The Lehigh Valley is playing host to a number of Veterans Day remembrances, with COVID-19 restrictions in place.

Veterans Day is one of 11 annual federal holidays, which means many businesses are closed. Here’s a look at what’s open and what’s closed to mark the holiday:

Northampton County Courthouse

Federal, state, county and municipal offices

All federal and state offices observe the holiday.

Northampton County and Lehigh County offices are closed as are the county courthouses; Warren County offices also are both closed. Warren County courts already have been operating at a reduced level due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Municipal offices vary. The city offices of Bethlehem and Allentown are open while the Easton office is closed. Also closed are the offices in Wilson Borough, Forks Township and Palmer Township.

There will be no mail delivery or pickup on Wednesday, Nov. 11. Priority Mail Express, however, is delivered 365 days a year and will be delivered on Veterans Day, said Desai Abdul-Razzaaq, a spokesman for the postal service.

He said normal delivery and collection schedules will resume Thursday, Nov. 12. Stamps also will be available at most grocery stores, pharmacies and convenience stores.
