MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Jack Becker scored a late third-period goal and fellow captain Strauss Mann stopped 23 of the 26 shots he faced, but the No. 7-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team fell, 4-2, to No. 3 Minnesota on Saturday night (March 6) at 3M Arena at Mariucci.

Moments after Wisconsin had locked up the Big Ten's regular-season title with a sweep of Michigan State, Michigan (14-9-1, 11-9-0 Big Ten) and Minnesota (20-6-0, 16-6-0 Big Ten) dropped the puck to close out the regular season.

The teams traded chances for the majority of the opening period, but neither side converted until the Gophers opened the scoring with 3:35 remaining off a useful backhand shot from in tight.

Not wanting to be left out of the fun, the Wolverines struck with a goal of their own just 55 seconds later. Thomas Bordeleau boxed out a defender to provide a screen in front of the blue paint while blueliner Owen Power protected the puck and glided along the top of the zone, just inside the blue line. Power spun around at the right point and dished a centering pass to his partner, Nick Blankenburg, who took a few strides toward the net before ripping a precise strike off the crossbar and in to tie the game at one apiece. Power and Bordeleau collected assists on Blankenburg's fifth goal of the year at 17:20 of the first frame.

After one period of play, the game was tied at one apiece, but Minnesota had built an early 8-6 advantage in shots on goal.

Halfway through the second stanza, the home side was able to net its second goal of the night. While on the power play, the Gophers found an open forward on the left dot who wasted no time before claiming the all-important third goal of the game for Minnesota with a quick rip.

The Wolverines worked to find a late equalizer but had each attempt turned away before going into the room for the second intermission in desperate need of a tying goal. With two periods in the books, Minnesota had jumped out to a 2-1 lead fueled by a 20-14 edge in shots.

Early in the third period, the Golden Gophers scored a quirky goal off a one-timer from the left dot to go up 3-1 with 16:21 remaining in the contest.

After unsuccessfully trying to narrow the gap for the bulk of the final frame, Jack Becker buried a laser of a wrist shot with 2:57 left in regulation to cut Michigan's deficit to one goal, 3-2. Becker's marker, his 50th career point for the Wolverines, was assisted by a pair of freshmen in Brendan Brisson and Bordeleau.

With Mann on the bench for an extra attacker and the Wolverines searching for a third goal, Minnesota collected a loose puck deep in its own end and flipped it toward the U-M cage for an empty-net goal to ice the contest from 200 feet away and solidify the final score

With the split against Minnesota in hand, Michigan ends the regular season with a 14-9-1 conference record and the No. 3 seed in the Big Ten Tournament, scheduled for March 14-16 in South Bend, Ind.

The Wolverines will begin the postseason against No. 6 seed Ohio State on Sunday, March 14, at 8:30 p.m. The tournament, played in a single-elimination format, will be broadcast in its entirety on the Big Ten Network.
