Area Boys Basketball Roundup: This time, a close one goes MACCRAY's way - West Central Tribune

Going into Monday’s Camden Conference game against ninth-ranked (Class A) Renville County West, the Wolverines were 0-5 in games determined by 10 points or fewer. And it looked like it would go that way again when Jaguars senior Riley Ashburn scored in the post with a minute to go to put RCW up 65-64.

But with a left-handed layup by Gavin Husman with 18 seconds remaining, the Wolverines had the advantage again. A prayer from the corner by Ashburn fell short, giving MACCRAY the close win it has craved all year, 66-65.

“We’ve been close so many nights and haven’t been able to finish it,” said Wolverines head coach Lucas Post. “It’s nice to see the guys get it done here tonight.”

MACCRAY led by eight points in the second half before RCW managed to storm back. It was nearly a mirror image of the first half, where the Jaguars went into the break on a 14-2 run for a 39-38 lead. The Wolverines didn’t have a field goal in the final 4:25 of the opening half.

“The second half, it was almost exactly like the first half,” Post said. “We stayed in man and played some pretty solid defense down the stretch.”

Husman’s outside shooting was vital on Monday night. The junior guard nailed four 3-pointers in a 19-point effort. Senior Brady Kienitz was also in double figures for the Wolverines with a team-high 21 points along with six rebounds, four assists and two blocks.

“He played a heck of a ball game tonight,” Post said of Husman. “He’s a good shooter and it was nice to see him get some threes to go down.”

Post continued, “We were taking good threes and were able to do a good job playing inside-out. We’ve been trying to get these guys to keep going downhill and (Husman) got that done tonight, which was huge. Especially in such a physical game; the two teams were really getting after each other. It was a heck of an effort.”

The loss came despite a tremendous all-around game from Ashburn, who was 12 of 19 from the field for a game-high 29 points. He also had eight rebounds, seven assists and seven steals.

Nathan Schmidt followed with 11 points, and Brandan Hoberg had 10 points and five steals in the loss.

The Wolverines move to 5-7 in Camden play while the Jaguars fall to 10-3.

“The North is a war zone every night, that’s for sure,” Post said.

MACCRAY next faces Dawson-Boyd at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Clara City. RCW is scheduled to play at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley.
