Here's the Order of Play
(All times are local – GMT+2)
20:30 [7] Fares Dessouky v [6] Marwan ElShorbagy
It’s an all-Egyptian final in Cairo, as Fares Dessouky and Marwan ElShorbagy will go head-to-head for the title this evening.
This will be the sixth meeting between the pair on the PSA World Tour, and it is Dessouky that holds a 3-2 advantage. However, only one of those matches has come since the World No.8 returned from his devastating ACL injury, in which he spent 14 months away from the professional game.
The two have had very contrasting routes through to the final, with ElShorbagy having spent 100 minutes more on court. He started with a 3-1 win over Karim El Hammamy in the second round, before he defeated Youssef Ibrahim in straight games. His biggest win came over New Zealand’s Paul Coll in the last eight, winning in a fifth game after 96 minutes. ‘The Jackal’ downed Wales’ Joel Makin in the semis to reach the final.
Dessouky has spent just three hours on the glass court in Cairo, compared to ElShorbagy’s 279 minutes. ‘Fearless Fares’ had gotten the better of Ramit Tandon and Omar Mosaad in straight games before coming up against World No.1 Ali Farag in a repeat of December’s final. He then overcame World Champion Tarek Momen in straight games to make tonight’s final, his first at this level.
After their respective semi-final wins, both players saw their level increase on the SquashLevels Power Ratings. Both players remained in the positions they were in, with Dessouky at #2 and ElShorbagy at #4. The algorithm sees ‘Fearless Fares’ having a 56% win likelihood in the final.
Can Dessouky win a tenth straight match at the Black Ball Sporting Club, and claim a first Platinum title? Or will ElShorbagy put his winning run at this venue to an end?
