Castagnet Defeats ElSherbini

Mathieu Castagnet takes on Mohamed ElSherbini

Frenchman Mathieu Castagnet has reached round two of the CIB Black Ball Open after an impressive showing against Egypt’s Mohamed ElSherbini.

The World No.24 moved well and attacked with vigour to complete an 11-3, 11-9, 11-7 victory over his opponent.

Castagnet will take on either 2018 champion Karim Abdel Gawad or Zahed Salem in the next round.

“I enjoy fighting at eleven in the morning,” said Castagnet.

“I’m used to waking up early because my daughter wakes up at seven in the morning. It’s like I’m at home with my wife and my daughter. At 34 it’s more work when you play at eleven in the morning, it’s quite difficult to move.

“I woke up at seven in the morning, had my breakfast at 7:30 then I did a little bit of stretching and tried to activate my body as well. It’s like it’s 3pm right now for me.

“I have to work [for the rest of the day]. I’m preparing for an exam at the end of April, I would like to be a coach in the future and in France you have to pass an exam. I also have to prepare for a conference with a company, so I have a lot of things to do, it will be a busy day.

“I would like to be at the swimming pool tomorrow but with the COVID-19 pandemic we cannot do it. I’m going to try and work, to see my friends with social distancing of course and try to enjoy my rest day, which I need to prepare for my next round.”

Mosaad Moves Past Clyne

‘The Hammer of Thor’ Omar Mosaad booked his place in the last 16 after a solid performance brought about a 3-0 win over Scotland’s Alan Clyne.

The powerful Egyptian was on top throughout the 36-minute affair, with some uncharacteristic errors from Clyne contributing to his eventual downfall.

Mosaad will line up against either defending champion Fares Dessouky or India’s Ramit Tandon in the next round.

“I enjoyed playing again after three months,” said Mosaad.

“Usually in the first round there is a little bit of stress. We haven’t played for three months and you have to win, so there is more pressure on every point. After the first game I started to focus and to find my game, and I really enjoyed playing again on the PSA.

“There are some disadvantages and advantages [to his height]. Reach is an advantage but you have to train so much to focus on mobility and be strong and physical to not get injured every time you play. You have to put some good work in and train well and I’m really happy to be here.”

Marche Claims First Win Over Rodriguez

It’s been a good day for France so far as World No.15 Gregoire Marche became the second Frenchman to seal his third round berth following an impressive 3-0 victory over Colombia’s Miguel Rodriguez.

Marche had never beaten the 35-year-old in four previous fixtures on the PSA World Tour but was sublime as he came out on top in an entertaining 64-minute encounter, with an 11-4, 15-13, 11-8 victory sending him through to the last 16.

Marche will play either World Champion Tarek Momen or Malaysia’s Eain Yow Ng in the next round.

“The second game was crucial,” said Marche.

“Even if I had the lead at 10-8 there were a few weird decisions at the end of the second. I just tried to stay calm and focused as much as I could. I think I played the crucial points pretty well, that’s something that I’ve been working on for the last few months.

“Maybe a few months ago I wouldn’t have done the same thing in the second. I felt a bit flat physically because after being in the room for two days it’s not easy, you don’t really know where your body is physically. It’s a great win, I think it’s the first time that I’ve beaten Miguel.

“It proves that my game is going up and I hope that I can relax tomorrow and be ready for Monday. I think I was 7-1 down [in the third] and I didn’t want to give that game up easy because it’s never good to lose a game in five minutes because you give hope to the opponent. I wanted to be a bit more relaxed, get my shots a bit more accurate and make him run, at least.

“He made some mistakes, so I was happy to take it point-by-point and then when it was 7-5 I thought that maybe there was something to do, and I’m happy with the win.”
