Minnesota United is closing in on adding a striker for the 2021 season.
The Loons have been pursuing Boca Juniors forward Ramon Abila, and the deal is considered close to being done, sources told the Pioneer Press on Tuesday.
Reports from Argentina have Abila coming to Minnesota on a season-long loan with a purchase option for a full transfer. The 31-year-old Argentine would fill the spot vacated by Paraguayan Luis Amarilla, another loanee who wasn’t able to be retained from parent Argentine club Velez Sarsfield after an injury-filled 2020 season in Minnesota.
Abila, 31, has not played much for Boca in 2021 because of an injury, but he posted a photo of himself training on Tuesday. Abila was on the historic Buenos Aires club with current Loons attacking midfielder Emanuel Reynoso before last season.
Like with Reynoso, Abila supports a new destination to play, according to reports.
CHACON LOANED OUT
Loons Designated Player Thomas Chacon is expected to be loaned out to Liverpool FC, a Montevideo, Uruguay club in the Primera Division. The deal needs MLS approval and could be finalized this week.
The Loons need to get Chacon playing time and feel like this could be an avenue to reestablish his confidence.
Chacon, 20, has played 257 minutes in six games since his arrival in August 2019.
INTERNATIONAL CALL-UPS
Five United players will join their senior national teams for international competitions over the next week: goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair (Canada), midfielder Jan Gregus (Slovakia), right back Romain Metanire (Madagascar), and fullback Jakka Raitala and winger Robin Lod (Finland).
They will be away for World Cup qualifiers, or in Metanire’s case, for African Cup of Nations qualifiers.
These players did not join the Loons on their trip to Florida on Tuesday to continue preseason camp. Minnesota’s first preseason game is Saturday against the Charleston Battery.
BRIEFLY
The Loons were scheduled to participate this summer in the Leagues Cup, a tournament between top teams in MLS and Mexico’s Liga MX, but were left off the revised announcement Tuesday. No reason was given by MLS. Sporting Kansas City, Seattle, Orlando City and New York City are the four MLS teams in the field. Mexico’s teams will be announced later. … Loons midfielder Hassani Dotson and the U.S. Under-23 team will have their final group-stage game of Olympic qualifying against Mexico at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. Their following game will be in the semifinals on Sunday. … Loons center back Callum Montgomery didn’t play in Canada’s 0-0 draw with Haiti in Olympic qualifying Monday. The Canucks play Honduras on Thursday.
