Open Eye Figure Theatre’s Driveway Tour, which brings puppet shows to neighborhoods throughout the Twin Cities, returns this summer. The tour ran for 17 summers, but had to be canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Open Eye announced last week that registration is open for the outdoor puppet shows, which feature hand-crafted puppets, three performers and a live musician. Anyone can host a show, according to Open Eye, and you don’t even need a driveway. The traveling production can set up almost anywhere.

Puppeteers and musicians will perform in masks and audience members older than 2 will be asked to mask. The shows are outdoors with social distancing.

This summer’s production is a return of a Driveway Tour favorite, “The Amazing Cowboat,” featuring a new cast. In “Cowboat,” Charlie has to take a bath and pretends he is the captain of a boat that is part cow and part boat. According to Open Eye, puppetry artists Liz Howls and Oanh Vu will redevelop the script and the design of the main character puppet to reflect the image and experience of a young child of Vietnamese descent.

For information on hosting the tour and how to register, go to openeyetheatre.org.

At the Open Eye website, there’s also information on storyteller Kevin Kling performing his adaptation of Nikolai Gogol’s “Diary of a Madman.” Composer/musician Victor Zupanc created an original soundscape for the performance. The radio/audio play is available to stream as part of the theater company’s ongoing OPEN EYE @ HOME series.
