Open Streets is expanding to the performing arts, and four streets on the UWS have been approved to host live shows, Patch first reported.
The new program is called Open Culture, and “Arts and cultural institutions, as well as entertainment venues, will have the opportunity to secure a permit for socially distanced performances at over 100 street locations throughout all five boroughs.”

Applications first opened on March 1, and the initiative will run through October 31, 2021.
The following Upper West Side streets are approved “Open Culture Locations:”
- 75th Street between Broadway and Amsterdam
- 75th Street between Broadway and West End
- 105th Street between Amsterdam and Columbus
- 63rd Street between Broadway and Columbus

Open Culture will allow permit holders to host ticketed performances, and examples of the types of venues that would be approved include theaters, music venues and comedy clubs.
Here is a partial list of what will be prohibited at these events:
- Sales of food and merchandise
- Live animals or horse carriages
- Open flames or fires
- Inflatable rides and bouncy houses
- Carnival games
- Pyrotechnics or fireworks
- Tents or canopies exceeding 400 gross square feet
Stages are allowed, but they cannot exceed 120 square feet in area and 2 feet in height.
Each applicant is allowed to book up to 4 event days per month, and the maximum duration for any event is 12 hours. Crowd sizes for each event will be limited to 50 people.
