After a pair of non-conference contests the Boxer women's lacrosse team opened Northwest Conference play over the weekend with a pair of home contests against the Willamette Bearcats. The Boxers were unable to get into the win column but pushed the Wildcats throughout the weekend and put forth a strong battle in both contests.
The action opened up on Saturday with Willamette taking early control as the Boxers saw the Bearcats tally the first six goals of the contest. Pacific broke through with 7:20 remaining in the first half as Sydney Bierenkoven scored her first goal of the day, but Willamette added two more goals before halftime making it 8-1.
Second half belonged to the Boxers as Pacific came out of halftime firing on all cylinders and went on a 5-0 run over a six minute period as Katrina Boyd and Amber Lancia each registered a goal and Biernekoven tallied three during the run which made it 10-7 Willamette. That would be the closest the Boxers would be able to get to Willamette in the second half as the teams traded goals the rest of the way and Willamette won 15-11.
Bierenkoven paced the Boxers with five goals, while Boyd had two and Lancia, Julien Dagan, Vivian Mai, Hyland Cullen-Musengo each had a goal. Madyson Ivey recorded two saves on the day at goalie, while Amelai Haindl saw action in the second half and had three saves.
Sunday saw the two teams do battle again in Forest Grove and while the outcome was a similar score the game was far more balanced throughout the contest. The teams traded goals for the first six goals of the season with Katrina Boyd getting the Boxers first goal of the day 13 and half minutes into the contest. Game tied at 3-3, Willamette tallied back-to-back goals and used that cushion to keep the Boxers at bay. At the half Pacific trailed 7-4. Boxers were back within two at 9-7 in the second half after a Cullen-Musengo goal but Willamette went on to take the game 14-11.
In the loss Bierenkoven, Boyd, Lancia, and Mai all recorded two goals, while Cullen-Musengo got one. Ivey anchored the goal for the Boxers registering seven saves.
Boxers keep the season rolling next weekend March 27th and 28th and will be looking for their first win of the season as they host Linfield for a pair of contests.
