ATLANTA – The Duke volleyball team closed out its 2020-21 season Saturday as it fell to No. 23 Georgia Tech, 3-1 (18-25, 15-25, 25-20, 14-25), at O'Keefe Gym in Atlanta, Ga.
For the second match in a row, the Blue Devils were led by Ade Owokoniran with 13 kills and just four errors to hit .243 percent for the match as Gracie Johnson reeled in 12 to hit .250. Setter Alex Springate dished 32 assists, her ninth contest this year with 25+ assists, while libero Mackenzie Cole and Springate picked up 12 digs each.
At the net, Johnson led the team with four blocks while Cooper and Georgia Stavrinides brought in three each.
"Today, our team competed against a tough serving Georgia Tech team," head coach Jolene Nagel said. "It was good to see our team continue to fight through some tough rallies and earn some hard-fought points. It was also nice to see our team make some needed adjustments in match and maintain composure."
Georgia Tech leads the ACC in hitting percentage and today registered an impressive .352 clip.
Duke opened the match with a solid .235 hitting percentage but Georgia Tech controlled the tempo with a .382 showing with 15 kills and just two errors.
The Blue Devils struggled to find their rhythm in the second set as the Yellow Jackets tallied a .333 percentage to push their lead to 2-0.
Duke bounced back in a big way in the third set to win 25-20 as Moorea Wood and Johnson combined for eight of Duke's 14 third set kills. The Blue Devils' six blocks helped to limit the Yellow Jackets to a .061 percentage to their own .312.
The Blue Devils trailed 2-1 heading into the fourth set and despite racking up a .357 hitting percentage, Georgia Tech put up a whopping 18 kills and no errors on 25 attempts for an impressive .720 hitting percentage. Georgia Tech is now 13-4 this season.
"This group has really grown this past year both on and off the court," Nagel said. "The challenges of this past year forced our team closer together as they committed to each other to get stronger even while being apart. Social issues encouraged discussions and educational opportunities for all of us to grow and understand each other better. I'm very proud of this special group as athletes and as people as they have laid a strong foundation on which to build."
The Yellow Jackets were led by Julia Bergmann with 22 kills to hit .364.
The Blue Devils end their season 9-13 and 7-10 in the ACC.
