SILVER LAKE, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) –

The Eastern Michigan University women's golf team was in action today, April 23, for the first two rounds of the Mid-American Conference Golf Championships at the Silver Lake Country Club in Northeast Ohio.

A sun-filled day that saw temperatures hit higher than 60 degrees, the Eagles joined nine other conference schools - Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green, Central Michigan, Kent State, Northern Illinois, Ohio, Toledo, and Western Michigan - for 36 holes of stroke play.

After struggling to find its rhythm as a team through the first 18 holes of the event, the Green and White made an impressive push up the leaderboard in the back half of the day's action to secure themselves into the fifth overall spot in the team standings heading into the final round of play, which will take place tomorrow, April 24.

Eastern shot an opening-round 323 on the par-72, 6,227-yard Silver Lake course, a number which put the squad in seventh place overall after the morning round. Head Coach Stephanie Jennings' team improved vastly in the afternoon bout, where it knocked off a collective 10 strokes to fire a 313, which was the third-best second round of any team in the tournament. Four of Eastern's five players improved upon their respective first round scores in round two of the tournament. No. 13 ranked Kent State has led wire-to-wire, as the Golden Flashes turned in impressive rounds of 296 and 286, respectively, to finish two-under par on the day. KSU currently holds a 24-stroke lead over second-place Northern Illinois, and is in good position to continue its MAC-record stretch of consecutive championships (across all sports), that currently sits at 21.

Individually, it was Freshman Anna Watson (Ashland, Ohio-Ashland) that paced the Eagles as she turned in a solid total of 158 after shooting rounds of 80 and 78, respectively. Her total puts her inside the tournament's top-20.  She currently sits tied for 19th after her second round lifted her four spots on the leaderboard.

Sophomore Olivia Loberg (Bend, Ore.-Summit) and freshman Paige Zolciak (Perrysburg, Ohio-St. Ursula Academy) each finished one stroke behind Watson as they carded totals of 159 through the first two rounds of play. Loberg improved three shots between rounds, as she avenged and opening-round 81 by shooting a 78 in the afternoon's finale. Zolciak had the team's best round-over-round improvement, as she dropped seven strokes in round two following a team-best 76 in the afternoon. Her 76 was good for a career-low, one stroke better than her previous best mark of 77, which came in the first round of the Georgia State Invitational on March 29. Zolciak navigated well through tough bunker shots on multiple holes to keep herself within striking distance of par in both rounds.

Freshman Sophia Wygonik (Westland, Mich.-Livonia Franklin), playing in her first MAC Championship, turned in rounds of 79 and 84, respectively (163 total). Her most impressive shot of the day came on the par-3 17th hole, where she drained a 25-footer to birdie the hole in front of numerous Eastern supporters. Redshirt senior Maria Connelly (Waterville, Ohio-Anthony Wayne) rounded out the scoring lineup for Eastern with a two-round total of 165 (84, 81).

The Eagles are set to close out the championship event with the final round of play on Saturday. The 18-hole round is set to begin at 8:30 a.m.

The winner of the 2021 MAC Championship will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA regional round, May 10-12, at one of the four regional locations. The possible sites include Baton Rouge, La. (University Club), Columbus, Ohio (OSU Golf Club – Scarlet Course), Louisville, Ky. (University of Louisville Golf Club), and Stanford, Calif. (Stanford Golf Course), followed by the NCAA Championships set to be May 21-26 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Live scoring will be available via Golfstat. Unofficial scores will be reported every hole. To follow the live scoring at the 2021 MAC Women's Golf Championship, click here.
