Softball Falls in Close Midweek Battle to #3 Florida - FGCU Athletics

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU Softball team (21-16) fell in its midweek tilt to No. 3 Florida (33-6), 3-0, Wednesday evening at the FGCU Softball Complex.

"A lot of credit goes out to our pitching staff and defense. We did a nice job of keeping them at bay after the first two hitters," said head coach David Deiros. "We did a good job of keeping it close but we just had to do a better job offensively, not necessarily sitting back and being a victim but taking the game more to them. I wanted to get as many people in as possible to this type of atmosphere and game because these are the ones that get you ready heading into ASUN postseason play soon."

The Gators got on the board in the top of the first as a leadoff single set up a two-run homer for Cheyenne Lindsey, launching it over the right-field wall. From that point, starting pitcher Sarah Lawton (Waterbury, Conn./Holy Cross HS) settled in and retired nine straight batters before UF's next hit.

FGCU threatened in the bottom of the third placing the tying run on third. Abbey Thomas (Fort Myers, Fla./Southwest Florida Christian) singled to left-center as Ahnie Jumper (Clewiston, Fla./Plantation American Heritage) ran in her place. Jumper moved to second on a grounder and then to third on a base hit to left from McKenna Batterton (Norco, Calif./Eleanor Roosevelt), but the frame would end on a diving grab up the middle from UF's second baseman.

Florida tacked on its last run in the top of the seventh, a sac fly to left field en route to the 3-0 win.

FGCU and Florida registered three hits apiece after four frames before the Gators walked away with the 7-3 margin.

Lawton moves to 7-5 in the circle after tossing 3.0 innings, on two hits, two runs, and one strikeout. Marissa Mesiemore (Bushnell, Fla./South Sumter HS) pitched 3.0 innings, scattering four hits with one run and two strikeouts. Meanwhile, Taylor Bauman (Jacksonville, Fla./Atlantic Coast HS) and Emily Estroff (Coconut Creek, Fla./Coral Springs Charter/Villanova) combined for the final frame. It was the first pitching appearance of the season for Estroff. There were no walks given up by the Eagles' pitching staff.
