AUBURN, Ala. – Auburn sophomore Anna Foster made history in her home country of Ireland on Sunday by winning the 2021 AIG Irish Women's Amateur Close Championship at the Old Course at Ballybunion. The prestigious tournament dates back to 1894.
Foster, who advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2019 Irish Women's Close Championship, finished 11th in a field of 64 in this year's stroke play portion and then won five matches over the course of three days, including a 2&1 victory over Beth Coulter in Sunday's final.
"It still hasn't sunk in. I'm so happy," Foster said. "The whole week was about taking one shot at a time, and I never got ahead of myself from Thursday morning. It was all about staying calm and present. I'm delighted to add my name to the trophy. It's a pleasure to have it there with the likes of the Maguire twins and Olivia Mehaffey."
Foster is coming off a debut season at Auburn in which she was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team. Her best finish came at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic where she placed a team-best seventh overall. She shot par or better in six of her 20 rounds, including a 70 (-2) in the third round of last month's NCAA Championship.
This is Foster's first individual victory since the East Leinster Girls Championship in 2018.
It was the second trophy of the summer for the Auburn women's golf team as incoming freshman Morgan Jones won the Alabama Girls State Junior Championship earlier this month. Jones shot a 64 (-8) in the final round and finished at 13-under.
