GREENSBORO — Richmond Senior High School’s girls’ track and field team was well-represented at Friday’s NCHSAA 4A state championship meet.
Sending five athletes to compete in four different events, the Lady Raiders competed against some of the top competitors in the state at North Carolina A&T State University’s Truist Stadium.
Sophomores Isis Covington, Andrea Ellerbe and Akeya Harrison, junior Talayeh Covington and senior Jakerra Covington all qualified for states during last week’s 4A Mideast Regional, which was held at UNC-Pembroke.
Richmond’s boys’ team had several athletes compete at the Regional, but didn’t have any state qualifiers.
Ellerbe was the lone individual sprinter for Richmond, finishing 15th overall in the open 200-meter dash with a time of 26.94 seconds. Cardinal Gibbons High School’s Shawnti Jackson won the event (23.06 seconds).
The Lady Raiders’ best finish of the day came in the 4x200-meter relay race, seeing Richmond post a time of 1:47.99, good enough for 10th place. Ellerbe started the first leg, before the baton was passed to Harrison, Talayeh Covington and anchored by Isis Covington.
Harding University High School took the state title in the 4x200-meter relay (1:40.91).
The same four Richmond runners also ran in the 4x100-meter relay, in the same order, finishing 13th in the state. Their time was 50.33 seconds, exactly three second off the mark from first-place finisher Cardinal Gibbons (47.33 seconds).
Jakerra Covington competed in the lone field event for Richmond, the shot put, and finished 14th overall. She threw to a final distance of 30’-11”, less than two feet from breaking the top 10 spots in the event.
Winning the girls’ shot put was Southeast Raleigh High School’s Autumn Judd (42’-9”). Winning the 4A girls’ state title as a program was Olympic High School (69 points) and Millbrook High School (53 points) won the boys’ state championship.
Richmond head coach Reggie Miller said he was impressed with the Lady Raiders’ performance and is excited that Isis Covington, Talayeh Covington, Ellerbe and Harrison will all be back next spring.
Jakerra Covington is set to begin her collegiate track and field career as a multi-event athlete with North Carolina State University in the fall.
