After someone spotted a bear taking an early sunrise stroll on Sunday Morning, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources has confirmed a black bear sighting in Vanderburgh County.

Officials say the infamous Black Bear was spotted In Northeast Vanderburgh County, with the closest town to the sighting being Elberfeld, Indiana.

"I've been seeing stuff kind of happening in southern Illinois with the bears, so we just kinda don't know what to expect," says Elberfeld resident Adina Birch. "If it's already just roaming around town, who knows where it could be."

While normally the town would welcome anyone with open arms, they say this is one guest they won't allow.

"I don't know that I'd really want to see it, hearing about is good enough for me," says Darlene Oath.

As this is the fourth Black Bear sighting in Indiana, locals say they have been studying what to do, just in case the bear decides to come back.

"Maybe wave my hands like they said or holler and try to distract it, " Oath says.  While Birch says she worries about her kids "Our animal is kept inside, and our children know where to play."

According to the Department of Natural Resources, black bears are usually not aggressive towards humans. But when it comes to food, they tend to lose their fear of people.

To Avoid any Human-Bear contact, The Indiana DNR advises everyone to:

  • Remove bird feeders from your home
  • Clean and store away your grills
  • Do not leave any food for your pets outside

The Indiana DNR asks anyone who may spot the bear to report it on the DNR website.
