The winner of the 2021 3M Open will walk away with a check of up to $1,188,000 out of a $6.5 million total purse. The purse could change per person depending on ties. Cameron Tringale holds a one-shot lead heading into the final round having shot -12 through 54 holes. Gary Woodland and Maverick McNealy follow at -11 and there is an eight-way tie at -10. Tringale is playing for his first solo career victory on the PGA Tour.
Last week, Collin Morikawa won the British to take home $2,070,000 in prize money out of an $11.5 million prize pool. It marked the final major of the year and the last eight-figure open prize pool.
Among the majors, the British Open was tied for the lowest pool. The Masters purse was $11.5 million, the PGA Championship was at $12 million, and the U.S. Open was $12.5 million. The Players Championship has continued hiking its purses in recent years to solidify its status as a quasi-fifth major and paid out a whopping $15 million in 2021.
This week’s 3M Open has a slightly lighter leaderboard than normal due to the ongoing Olympics. The Olympic Golf tournament doesn’t start until next Thursday, but most of the big names are taking the week off in preparation after spending last week in England.
