Scotland schools to open with masks - Laurinburg Exchange

LAURINBURG —Students in Scotland County Schools will have to wear masks for the first month of school, at least.

The Scotland County Board of Education voted unanimously, with the exception of board members Summer Woodside and Raymond Hyatt who were not in attendance, on Monday during its Committee of the Whole meeting to have students continue to wear the masks in the buildings. The decision came after the state allowed for local boards to make the decision on students wearing masks when the school year begins.

“The governor’s position is he is trusting the local school boards to use their data and make decisions on what’s best for their local community,” said Superintendent Takeda LeGrand.

LeGrand added based on the rising numbers in the community she recommended the board to approve the masks for the first month to protect students and staff then revisit the decision monthly.

“We’ve got to open our doors again to start the regular school year in August so what will that look like with our families and our students here in Scotland County,” LeGrand said. “Based off this toolkit, pretty much it’s a local decision … I am encouraging that board to start thinking about this and get us on track with that thinking because I think it’s something we should revisit every month. Our data should drive our decision-making on where we are as a community and what’s best for our community.”

Online learning

During the meeting, the board also got an update on the Scotland County Online Teaching for Students.

“The application will be available to parents on Aug. 2 on the website,” LeGrand said. “Each myself, Mr. Wells and each of the executive team, we will have a table at the open houses to get input from parents as well.”

The online learning will be for grades four to 12 only to focus on students who are able to learn more independently.

“This format will not mirror the format that did last year,” LeGrand said. “We want to be clear expectations on what this is going to look like. This is going to require at least two-third of independent learning happening online with interactive modules with one-third director tutor support and live teacher from a person in real-time.”

The live teaching would give students only about one to two days a week of learning with a teacher.

“This is not only for our students who might not want to attend school due to COVID,” LeGrand said. “Our SCOTS program can open us up to our homeschool students who may want to participate in our athletics or other extracurricular activities.”

LeGrand did add if the student was struggling with online learning the schools would work to integrate the student back into face-to-face learning if it was best for the child.

“We’ve taken the feedback and we’ve created FAQs for parents and teachers,” said Chief Accountability Officer Michael Riles. “Those will be going out this Friday with our marketing materials … it will take a two-week turnaround to get enrollment information and from that, we’ll start to develop classes and get those schedules out.”
