In a move welcome to many couples, families, tourists and businesses, The Telegraph has reported that U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson is planning to open to fully vaccinated travelers from the EU and the U.S. from 16 August, without the need for quarantine.
The Prime Minister, it is understood, was persuaded to open up to U.S. and EU fully vaccinated travelers after listening to ministers make the case that continued travel restrictions from these countries was harming the U.K. economy.
Today was the first day back for Johnson after going into self-isolation after coming into contact with his Health Secretary, Sajid Javid, who had tested positive for Covid-19.
Covid-19 cases have been falling daily in the U.K., after weeks of steep climbs due to a surge in transmission of the Delta variant of Covid-19. Prof Neil Ferguson, as reported by The Telegraph, a member of the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE), agreed that things were now looking more optimistic.
‘We’re not completely out of the woods, but the equation has fundamentally changed. The effect of vaccines is hugely reducing the risk of hospitalizations and death,’ Ferguson reported.
At the moment, travelers from the U.S. and many EU countries must face a complicated quarantine and testing process because the U.K. is only able to accept fully vaccinated travelers with vaccines administered by the NHS.
As reported by The Guardian, the government is expected to formally announce these changes to travel policy on Wednesday 28 July.
The idea is that as long as EU travelers are in possession of an EU Digital COVID Certificate and U.S. travelers have a vaccine card, with a vaccine that is allowed in the U.K., then they will be allowed entry without quarantine.
It will be decided on Wednesday if the policy will be agreed and if it will apply to all four devolved nations, including Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland or just England.
