The Hawaiʻi Department of Human Services will be offering a summer pandemic electronic benefit transfer, a food assistance program that helps feed children who no longer have access to school lunches and breakfast.

The number of Hawaiʻi residents who receive the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, previously known as food stamps, has increased by nearly 50,000 people from March 2020 to March 2021.

According to the DHS, 153,047 people used SNAP in March 2020, and 201,193 people in March 2021.

P-EBT will provide families with $438 in food purchasing assistance per child. The money will be directly wired to an existing P-EBT card or Kokua EBT card. Those who do not have a card can order one from the DHS.
