The stage is set for what should be a wild weekend at the 149th Open Championship. It starts with a top-shelf leader in Louis Oosthuizen, who is going to have to try and stave off some all-time champions behind him, including Collin Morikawa, Jordan Spieth, Dustin Johnson, Jon Rahm and Brooks Koepka. What could be more compelling than that?
There are great appetizers at Royal St. George's on Saturday, too. Bryson DeChambeau and Rory McIlroy, both of whom are too far back to truly contend for the Claret Jug, will go out early and set the tone for whatever is going to happen later on the day. Open weekends are normally quite dramatic, and this one has all the pieces to fit in nicely with the last decade's worth. One thing we can all hope for this weekend at Royal St. George's is breezier conditions after it got rolled over on Thursday and Friday.
Regardless, the last 36 of the last major of this season should be terrific. Oosthuizen trying to slam the door on his second major (11 years after his first!) and a whole host of multi-time major winners trying to keep him from doing just that.
