The Fourth of July 2021 is here, bringing with it a long weekend of festivities, fireworks, and barbecues for traders and others.

Independence Day celebrates the signing of the Declaration of Independence, which announced the original 13 colonies’ separation from Great Britain, on July 4, 1776. This year marks the 245th anniversary of the signing, and celebrations should be brighter than a year ago when lockdowns restricted gatherings and concerns over rising cases grew. Independence Day was one of the first federal holidays, which means federal agencies will be closed on Sunday, July 4, and on Monday, July 5, when the holiday will be observed. That also means most banks will be closed and mail won’t be delivered.

The holiday marks a midway point of the year and comes after the stock market closed a strong first half earlier this week. As of Friday’s close, the S&P 500 is up 16% so far this year. The Dow Jones Industrial Average and tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite are both up more than 13% over the period.

Here’s what you need to know about the stock market’s hours over the long weekend.

Is the U.S. stock market closed for the Fourth of July weekend 2021?

The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq were open on Friday and will be closed on Monday. U.S. over-the-counter markets and U.S. bonds markets closed early at 2 p.m. on Friday and will be closed on July 5.

Will international markets be closed for the Fourth of July weekend?

Since July 4 commemorates America’s independence, international markets won’t observe the holiday. The London, Shanghai, Tokyo, Toronto, and Hong Kong stock exchanges will all be open regular hours on Monday.

How is Covid-19 affecting the holiday?

The U.S. is set for a busy holiday weekend, with millions expected to hop on flights and many more hitting the roads. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends delaying travel for those who aren’t vaccinated and has said that fully vaccinated people could travel domestically provided they continue to wear masks and socially distance to protect others. Fully vaccinated people can safely gather without masks or social distancing but should continue to follow local safety guidelines, the CDC advises.

The U.S. will likely miss the Biden administration’s target of administering at least one dose of vaccine to 70% of adults by July 4, the Associated Press reported, with the CDC reporting that there continues to be a significant disparity in vaccination rates between rural and urban areas.

Concerns over the Delta variant that rampaged through India in May have damped global recovery efforts and spurred new lockdowns in Asia and Australia. In the U.S., the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health released new guidelines Monday that said it “strongly recommends” vaccinated people wear masks indoors due to the prevalence of the Delta variant in L.A. county.
