Mt. Pleasant School of Dance (MPSD) will soon be open to hold dance classes at the new studio.

Earlier in 2021, MPSD owner Andrea Purrenhage purchased the new studio space in 118 S. Washington Street near downtown Mt. Pleasant. Throughout the summer, the new studio space has been under renovation.

The grand opening ceremony occurred on Thursday, Aug. 26 at 4 p.m. and included a ribbon cutting ceremony with representatives of the Mt. Pleasant Area Chamber of Commerce, some opportunities to meet the staff, buy merchandise and shoes, have some food and beverages, and view the renovations.

One of the big renovations includes adding a special hip-hop practice studio. The studio will have hard wood floors and black lights. It also has a special mural created by Lansing based artist Ozay Moore, who also runs a non profit reaching at risk kids through the culture of Hip Hop. Purrenhage was connected with Moore through hip hop instructor Bird Clarkson, who knows Moore through work with festivals.

“We want to bring in a more diverse crowd and we want the hip hip culture to be a part of Mt. Pleasant,” Purrenhage said.

The studio will also be having a local artist graffiti a part of the outside of the studio which will serves as a place to hold dance battles for crews all over Michigan. The first dance battle will be held Sept. 11 and first prize is expected to be $450.

One of the other practice spaces is a ballet studio that has special Marley flooring, which is considered the standard for professional ballet performance spaces.

“Our goal is to create a professional environment for students,” Purrenhage said.

Zachary Denison, an NYC guest artist, was brought in to the new studio before it’s official opening for a Contemporary Dance Residency.

“Zachary is a Broadway performer who has toured with the Music Man and Cats,” Purrenhage said. “He also teachers at Rutgers University and has performed on tour with Jennifer Hudson. Zachary taught at MPSD for four hours a day the entire week giving students the same course work he does for Rutgers. Our dancers got a taste of what it is like to be a working dance professional.”

The studio will officially open for classes on Monday, Aug. 30 and there are still classes open to register for.

MPSD will also soon be holding auditions on Sept. 2 and Sept. 3 for the studio’s holiday show “The Nutcracker ‘Re-imagined.'” Auditions for the show are open to students ages 6 and up.

“This traditional Christmas story will be recreated to include multiple genres of dance including Tap, Contemporary, Jazz, Hip Hop, and Ballet,” Purrenhage said. “Our goal is to make this classic more inclusive to all dancers and give a holiday tradition to the Mt. Pleasant Community.”
