LAKE CHARLES – The McNeese Cowboys officially closed out fall camp on Saturday with a mock game scrimmage in Cowboy Stadium, pitting the Pokes No. 1 and 2 offense and defense vs. a West Florida look made up of the 3s and 4s as the Cowboys now turn their full attention to the Argonauts and next Saturday's season opener.
"I thought today went well," said second-year head coach Frank Wilson who wrapped up his first fall camp at McNeese. "It entailed the opportunity for us to be able to see some glimpses of our upcoming opponent to divide our team up, not necessarily to go against one another but to go against those things that we expect based on film study from West Florida."
The scripted scrimmage with thud tackling included long and short-yard situations on certain downs, red zone, two-minute, and full kicking game.
"A total game plan is certainly not in yet, but an ideal of what that will look like and how we would align in our pregame plan," said Wilson. "And so we kind of went through the modules of it today. I thought we did some good things. I thought our team that we intend on taking the field with the 1s and 2s finished really strong. I think our young guys who modeled for us, or mimic for us what West Florida is to look like, came out fired up and wanting to play tackle football. So it was a very productive day. It was not your typical walk through the motions. High spirited guys were flying all around and really got our football team better today."
The Cowboys will meet virtually on Sunday and will have their normal Monday off before returning to the practice field on Tuesday to continue preparing for the Argonauts who were recently voted as the No. 1 team in the Division II ranks.
"We're excited to get to work on them," said Wilson. "I know they have some transfers that have rolled in and so we'll continue to look at those personnel things, but from a schematic standpoint, we've put some due diligence in, in the summer, as well as sprinkled in throughout this fall camp. So we'll go through those things and look forward to this weekend, preparing."
Wilson also said he was very happy with how fall camp went for the Cowboys.
"I am. I am," he said. "I thought we stayed relatively healthy. I think we did develop some quality depth in our football team and made strides to get us where we need to be in preparation for a kickoff seven days from today."
McNeese will release its depth chart on Monday.
The Cowboys kickoff the season next Saturday at noon in Cowboy Stadium against West Florida, the defending Division II national champion. Dating back to last spring's season, McNeese will face three national champions in three straight games – Sam Houston (FCS champion) to close out the spring season, West Florida (2019 D2 champion) on Sept. 4, and LSU (2019 CFP champion).
