ELKINS — A young Elkins High School golf squad hit the links for the first time this season Monday at the Elks Golf Course for a matchup against Preston.
The Tigers finished with a a team score of 210, while the Knights carded a 195 to capture the match.
“We don’t have any seniors on the team this year,” EHS coach Dave Baird said. “Our roster includes two freshman and only one golfer who saw varsity action last season.”
Tanner Miller returns to the lineup after earning a berth in the state tournament in 2020. The junior had a 44 in Monday’s opener.
“We’re expecting big things from Tanner this season,” Baird said.
The two freshman in the lineup — Lucas D’Angelo and Danica Riggins — both shot 55s, while Thomas Nixon tallied a 56, Brooke Tallman a 62 and Cory Harper a 68.
“We were a little nervous today,” Baird said. “But we have a busy week ahead of us and we’ll get plenty of work in and continue to get better.”
Preston’s Brier Manko took low-medalist honors with a 42.
Elkins will return to action today at Bel Meadow in Clarksburg. Teams competing include host Lincoln, Lewis County, Liberty and South Harrison.
