Memorial Day is Monday, May 25, 2020, the same day a number of businesses and some recreational areas like beaches, which have been shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic, will begin reopening under a four-phase plan recently outlined by Gov. Charlie Baker.
That makes it a little more difficult to figure out what’s open and what’s closed on Memorial Day this year. Here’s a guide to help:
Memorial Day observances
The state has scheduled a virtual Memorial Day event with speakers and musical performers from across the Commonwealth, remarks by Governor Baker and Lt. Governor Polito, Legislative leaders, and a special “Tribute to the Fallen” by the Massachusetts National Guard. This program will stream at mass.gov/MemorialDay and on participating TV stations and digital channels Monday.
Government
City and town offices: Closed
State offices: Closed
Registry of Motor Vehicles: Closed
State and local courts: Closed
Federal courts: Closed
Recreation
State parks: Open
Springfield Armory National Historic Site: Closed. Some national parks are reopening, so check online: www.nps.gov/index.htm
Municipal parks: Check with town or city, but most jurisdictions are reopening. Springfield’s tennis courts will reopen while playgrounds and splash pads will remain closed.
Beaches: Can reopen starting Monday in Massachusetts with new rules in place.
Trustees of Reservations properties: Open
Alcohol
Massachusetts liquor stores: Closed until noon.
Connecticut liquor stores: Open
Parcel services
Post offices: Closed
FedEx: Closed, no regular pickup and delivery
UPS: Closed, but UPS Express Critical service is available
Banks
Closed, but check with your branch to make sure.
Financial Markets: closed
Shopping
New coronavirus guidelines allow more retailers to be open for curbside pickup beginning Monday.
Stores that have remained open:
Stop & Shop: Open 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Pharmacy hours will vary by store.
Big Y: Open 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Market Basket: Open 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Walmart: Open 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Target: Open 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Pride Stores: Open 24 hours
BJ’s: Open
Costco: Closed
CVS: Open, hours vary
Walgreen’s: Open, hours vary
Aldi: Open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Whole Foods: Open 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Transportation
Pioneer Valley Transit Authority: Modified service for essential trips only: see details here.
Worcester Regional Transit Authority: There will be no fixed route bus or paratransit service on Memorial Day.
MBTA:
- Monday, May 25, all subway and commuter rail lines, buses, and trackless trolley will operate on a Sunday schedule.
- All ferry service remains suspended until further notice.
- The RIDE trips must be booked 1-3 days in advance.
- The CharlieCard store at Downtown Crossing in Boston
remains closed until further notice. - In compliance with the Executive Order that went into effect on May 6, MBTA customers are reminded that face coverings must be worn while onboard MBTA vehicles and within stations.

Massachusetts highways
- The Sumner Tunnel swing lane will be deployed to aid with Blue Line bus shuttles and will be open throughout the holiday period beginning at 12 p.m., Friday, May 22, until 5 a.m., Tuesday, May 26.
- There are no plans to deploy the Boston-Quincy High Occupancy (HOV) lane as deployment was suspended when the State of Emergency was declared in Massachusetts.
- Service plazas along major highways, including I-90, will be open for fuel, take-out food only, and for restroom access.
