Monday, May 25 is Memorial Day.
The U.S holiday is considered the unofficial start of summer. More importantly, it is a time to honor all those who lost their lives while serving in the armed services.
Memorial Day is traditionally marked with barbecues and family gatherings but this year will look different due to the coronavirus pandemic that has restricted gatherings and limited hours for many restaurants and businesses.
Here’s a look at what’s open and what’s closed on Memorial Day 2020:
Federal offices – Closed. Memorial Day is a federal holiday.
State offices – Closed. Memorial Day is a state holiday in Alabama.
County and city offices – Most are closed. Check ahead before you go.
U.S. Post Office – Closed. There will be no regular mail delivery on Memorial Day.
Fed Ex and UPS – FedEx and UPS will not be delivering except for UPS Express Critical and FedEx Custom Critical packages.
Banks – Almost all banks are closed
Stock Markets - Closed
Grocery stores – Most major chains are open but some are operating on reduced hours due to coronavirus.
Hours at select stores are:
Aldis – 9 a.m.-6 p.m.
Publix – 7 a.m.-9 p.m.
Target – 8 a.m.-9 p.m.
Trader Joe’s – 9 a.m.-8 p.m.
Walmart – 7 a.m.-8:30 p.m.
Whole Foods – 9 a.m.-7 p.m.
Costco is closed on Memorial Day.
Drug stores – Drug stores such as CVS, Walgreens and Rite Aid will be open but check ahead as some hours have been reduced due to COVID-19.
Restaurants – Both major chains and local eateries are typically open on Memorial Day.
