Orange County-run beaches approved to open with restrictions - OCRegister

South Laguna Beach, Salt Creek, Strands Beach and Capistrano Beach — the last stretches of beach that remained forced closed this week — got the nod Thursday, May 7, from the state to reopen their beaches.

The approval by the California Natural Resources Agency comes with the same set of restrictions that are now found at all 42 miles of Orange County coastline: no putting down towels or umbrellas for hanging around. Beaches are open for “active use.”

“I am very pleased with this alternative to a complete shutdown and thecollaborative efforts of state, county, and local officials to bring the plan to fruition,” Supervisor Lisa Bartlett said. “This phased approach allows us to reopen our beaches in a prudent, responsible manner that prioritizes public health and safety, while recognizing the importance of outdoor recreation. We want Orange County residents to get back to fully enjoying their beaches as safely and quickly as possible.”

The county-operated beaches, run by OC Lifeguards, were the last piece of the coastal puzzle that now allows all beaches to be open for recreational uses such as surfing, swimming, walking and jogging. Seal Beach is reopening on May 11 and Laguna Beach is only open weekday mornings.

South Laguna beaches run by the county will mirror the neighboring city beaches and only open from 6 to 10 a.m. on weekdays.

Here are the details for each beach:

  • Bayside Beach (at Newport Harbor Patrol): 6 a.m.- 10p.m. daily.
  • County Beaches in South Laguna Beach (Aliso, Table Rock, West, Camel Point and Treasure Island beaches):  6 a.m.-10 a.m. weekdays only. Closed weekends.
  • Thousand Steps Beach will remain closed.
  • Capistrano and Poche Beaches: 6 a.m.-10 p.m. daily.
  • Salt Creek and Strands Beaches: 5 a.m.- midnight daily.
  • Baby Beach: 5 a.m.- 10 p.m. daily.
  • Parking lots and restrooms will remain closed.

“I want to thank Orange County for developing this plan to enable safe beach access that protects against the spread of COVID-19,” California Secretary for Natural Resources Wade Crowfoot said in the announcement.

All of Orange County’s coast was shut down by Gov. Gavin Newsom last week, in response to crowds that showed up to select areas of coastline amid a recent heatwave, and reopened as plans submitted by the various cities were approved.
