Gov. Kay Ivey’s amended health order allowed restaurants and bars, gyms, salons and churches to reopen today. Retail stores were allowed to reopen at 50% occupancy.
All must adhere to social distancing and sanitation guidelines.
Although allowed to open, some stores—both chain stores and locally owned businesses—remain closed for now. Some plan to reopen in the coming days and weeks.
Here’s a look at what’s open and what’s not in Birmingham.
At the Summit, Belk was open while nearby other chain stores including Sephora and Bath and Body Works were closed. At Belk, workers were at the door greeting customers. Hand sanitizer was available at the entrance.
The makeup and skincare counters were covered in plastic wrap. The jewelry counter was open, but employees were not allowing customers to try on jewelry.
A sign at the door told customers they should wear face coverings while shopping. Signs inside the store reminded customers to keep six feet apart.

Most restaurants were open at the Summit, including Taco Mama, where some customers sat on the sidewalks and in the grass to eat their take-out lunch.
Alex Hunter was there with her girlfriend, Alden Powell and her co-worker Akash Kwatra. The three were eating lunch in the grass island in the parking lot. Powell and Kwatra work at Taco Mama.
Kwatra and Powell said their schedules haven’t changed much, noting they’ve been busy with pickup orders. However, Kwatra said he worried about some of the older customers picking up food.
“I feel like I’m more worried for their safety than they are their own,” he said.
Despite having been out of work for nearly two months, Hunter said she supports everything staying closed.
She’s a bartender at Pies and Pints and said the restaurant is expected to reopen this week. Both Hunter and Powell said they’re still cautious about where they go.
“Without a vaccine, a virus like this doesn’t just stop. There’s not enough herd immunity,” Hunter said.
The Apple Store is closed, but is expected to reopen Wednesday, according to the Apple website.
Best Buy in Hoover is offering curbside pickup for online orders.
Locally-owned Little Professor Bookshop in Homewood has reopened.
Barnes and Noble in Hoover and locally-owned Thank You Books in Birmingham are doing curbside pickup for online orders.
The AMC Summit 16, AMC Patton Creek 15 and AMC Classic Lorna Ridge 10 remain closed. The Birmingham Premiere Lux Cine on Lakeshore Drive is also closed.
Riverchase Galleria reopened last week. Here’s a list of open stores.

Gyms were also allowed to reopen today.
At Gauntlet Fitness, a kickboxing gym in Homewood, the 9 a.m. class was full, said trainer Devin Chadwick.
She said one woman did wear a mask to class, but they aren’t required of gym members. Trainers and other staff are required to wear masks.
“Everyone seemed excited to be back, but you could tell people were nervous to be around other people,” she said. “It’s just so surreal to be back.”
Chadwick said the gym has ordered additional supplies like masks and disinfecting wipes to keep the gym clean and safe.
“We’re going to go through a lot of wipes, but that’s OK,” she said. She has already had to find a new wipe supplier because the company the gym usually buys from was out of stock. A station with wipes and a trash can are in the center of the gym so members can easily wipe down their equipment before leaving.
Emily Zimmerman attended a kickboxing class at the gym Monday afternoon. She’s a college student, and said she’s missed being able to sweat out her stress at the gym.
“They’re doing a great job keeping everything clean and wiping everything down,” she said.
The gym has modified its schedule and limited classes to eight people to ensure members don’t have to share equipment and have enough space to workout and stay six feet apart. Instead of doing their typical huddle after each workout, they’re doing it from a distance.
Other gym chains like Planet Fitness remain closed. The YMCA of Greater Birmingham said it plans to remain closed until early June.
Around Alabama, hair salons adopted new booking procedures, new best-safe practices and more, while others stayed closed, trying to navigate cleaning procedures and rules.
