Museums, art centers and – yes! – the Baseball Hall of Fame are opening this summer as New York’s shutdown loosens amid the coronavirus.
Some places are already open. Others are open to members, for now. A few plan to open in coming weeks.
Nearly all are requiring the same protocols: Reserved tickets and entrance times. Frequent hand sanitizing. Social distancing.
And all visitors and staff will wear masks. Children 2 and under do not have to wear masks.
Here’s a look at what’s happening at some popular places in Central New York and parts of Upstate:
Baseball Hall of Fame
Cooperstown, N.Y.
Open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The hall of fame is selling tickets with specific entrance times to lessen crowds. Face masks are required, and free ones are available for guests.
The museum will provide a rubber-tipped pen to activate touch-screens and buttons on displays. There are also 25 hand sanitizing stations throughout the museum.
The Grandstand Theater, Bullpen Theater, Learning Center and Sandlot Kids’ Clubhouse remain closed.
Everson Museum of Art
Syracuse, N.Y.
The museum plans to open in August.
Howe Caverns
Howes Cave, N.Y.
Open 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesdays to Sundays
Tours are by reservation only and pre-paid only. All guests must wear masks, which are also for sale at the gift shop. Visitors are asked to arrive 15 minutes before their tour is to begin.
Ithaca Children’s Garden
Ithaca, N.Y.
This outdoor space is open; all bathrooms are closed. Guests are asked to adhere to New York’s social distancing rules. All guests should wear masks. Handwashing stations are available.
International Boxing Hall of Fame
Canastota, N.Y.
The hall of fame will open at 11 a.m. Monday. Tickets will cost $8.50, the youth rate, through Aug. 31. Children 6 and under are free.
The facility will operate at 25% capacity. Masks are required for all.
Museum of Science and Technology
Syracuse, N.Y.
The MOST is offering a series of weekly summer day camps for three age groups: 4 to 7; 8 to 11; and 12 to 15. The camps start on Monday.
Each class size will have 10 kids or fewer. All counselors and staff will wear masks. Campers should bring masks and wear them when not outdoors or eating.
The MOST will use separate entrances for each group.
Rosamond Gifford Zoo
Syracuse, N.Y.
10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The zoo is still admitting visitors by reservation only. No walk-ins are allowed. Masks are required.
The zoo now has a one-way route, to keep visitors sparse throughout the park. The gift shop and cafe are closed; there are no outdoor vending carts. All buildings are closed.
Schweinfurth Art Center
Auburn, N.Y.
The art center plans to reopen Aug. 7 after installing a new HVAC system. The next exhibition is called “Made in NY.”
Strong National Museum of Play
Rochester, N.Y.
Open to members from June 27 to July 10. Open to the public starting July 11.
Utica Zoo
Utica, N.Y.
Opens 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday for members and on July 2 for the general public. The zoo will be open July 4.
Several areas of the zoo will be closed, including indoor buildings such as Wildlife Hall and the Auditorium, the Main and Mini barns in Children’s Zoo, the playground, Gibbon Viewing Window, optical viewers, and feed machines. The zoo will limit capacity to 33%. Face masks are required.
