Veterans, active-duty military and their family members across the country are invited to participate in the free North Carolina Veterans Songwriting Workshop the weekends of July 11-12 and July 18-19.
National touring musicians will lead the workshop, which will be streamed live on Zoom, giving veterans, active-duty military and their family members the opportunity to connect and share their experiences through music.
The workshop is hosted by Dare County Arts Council as part of their Veterans Arts Program. This is the second consecutive year that the Veterans Writing Project has worked with Dare County Arts Council on its songwriting program.
“Our Military and Veterans Arts Program ensures that North Carolina’s military personnel, veterans and their families have access to cultural programming as a way to connect with the community and for self-expression,” said Vicki Vitiello, who oversees the program for the North Carolina Arts Council. “Dare County’s songwriting workshop for veterans is a fun and important way to help veterans share and deal with military experiences through music.”
The workshop is designed for songwriters of all levels and will include programming in writing lyrics, song structure and basic music theory. Generally, participants should be able to play basic chords on an instrument, but lyricists may participate as well. Instructors and mentors include Tony Rosario, Jana Pochop, Shawnee Kilgore, Mike Lille, Karl Werne and Ron Capps.
“We’re bringing in professional songwriters from around the country with experience in Nashville, Austin and New York to work with the veterans,” said Ron Capps, who developed and leads the workshop for the Veterans Writing Project. “We’re scheduling lots of time for the participants to create new work or revise existing work on their own, working in small groups, or with one of the mentors.”
Thanks to a grant from the North Carolina Arts Council, the workshop is free and is open to veterans, active duty or reserve military and their families.
Those interested in participating can register online and find more information about the workshop at DareArts.org/veterans. Pre-registration is required. Attendees will receive a confirmation with more details after registration.
