Lafayette officials announced the purchase for multiple areas of open space along Baseline Road have been finalized.
In November, officials finalized the purchase of Waneka Centennial Farms and open space properties along the south side of Baseline Road and east of 120th Street. The city partnered with Boulder County and Boulder County Parks and Open Space to purchase some of the land.
This purchase included three parcels of land, including 136-acres which houses the Waneka family barn, storage structures and a residence known as Centennial Farms, a marshland which will be known as Waneka Pasture, and a 100-foot buffer from Baseline Road south along Burlington Trail to Emma Street.
In May, City Council agreed to spend $3.3 million to purchase 23.5 acres and provide open space to the community. City officials stated they had been in discussions with Baseline Lafayette, LLC, to buy the land for a couple of months.
This month, the city closed on a 15.33-acre open space trail buffer along South Burlington Avenue and a 23.5 acre parcel previously known as the Lowes property.
The property is zoned for commercial use, but Council could vote at a later date to zone it to open space.
“Preservation of open space is a community priority and a tangible way to add to the quality of our environment and surroundings for generations to come,” said Lafayette City Administrator Fritz Sprague in a statement. “These properties will protect our lands and serve as a visible welcome for visitors entering Lafayette from the east.”
The city officially owns 1,540 acres of open space, whether it’s solely-and jointly-owned parcels.
