One of three swimming sites operated by the Harrison County Parks Dept. is set to open next week and a second will be open starting July 4.
The beach at Buffalo Trace Park near Palmyra will open for swimming Friday, June 19, with hours from noon to 6 p.m.
Larry Shickles, superintendent of the Harrison County Parks Dept., said a temporary concession stand will be open there while the permanent concession building is still under construction.
The boat house and bait shop also will be operational beginning next Friday.
On Saturday, June 20, the parks department will offer a movie at the beach, and a food concession stand operated the Orme family will be open.
The pool at South Harrison Park near Elizabeth will open for the season on Saturday, July 4, with three time slots: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., 3 to 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. to midnight.
Shickles said the third session, “under the stars,” should be fun with the new colored lights installed in the pool during its renovation last year.
Swim hours on Sunday, July 5, at SHP will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 3 to 7 p.m.
Concessions at South Harrison Park will be available at the new food services building near the pool as well as near the camping area.
The May & Joe Rhoads Memorial Pool in Corydon will not open this year. It has been undergoing miscellaneous renovations. Shickles had recommended to the parks board not to open it this year; the board approved his recommendation by a 4-2 vote at its May meeting.
A fireworks display is planned for Sunday night, July 5, at South Harrison Park, Shickles said, with two bands playing on the stage at the park prior to the display by Casabella’s Fireworks. Additional details will be released as they become finalized, he said.
Swim admission this season will be $5 for Super Pass holders and $7 for those without the pass.
Harrison County residents can pick up their Super Passes, which are paid for by their township trustee, as follows (must show proof of residency):
Blue River — Trustee Michael Beyerle
Boone — Laconia General Store
Franklin, Harrison, Heth, Washington and Webster — Parks department office in Corydon through Sunday then at Harrison County Discovery Center in Corydon
Jackson — First Harrison Bank in New Salisbury
Morgan — First Harrison Bank in Palmyra
Posey — Trustee office
Spencer — Trustee office in Ramsey
Taylor — Through Posey Township trustee
“We’re excited to provide the opportunity for people to get out and do something with their families,” Shickles said.
Numerous other activities are in the works for the remainder of the year, with details being finalized.
