Pools are permitted to open in counties in the yellow and green phases of Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf’s reopening plan, but they must follow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state guidance. Is your local pool open? Here’s the status of community pools in central Pennsylvania as of June 8.

Annville-Cleona Community Pool

Closed: “We, as a board, did not feel that we could adequately meet all 3 of the above-mentioned criteria for safely opening the A-C pool. Therefore, we came to the difficult decision that the pool needed to remain closed for the 2020 summer season.”

Boiling Springs Pool

Open: Visitors must wear masks in common areas, but not in the pool, according to Boiling Springs guidelines. “From June 7th to June 11th, we will be allowing 75 daily admission customers into the pool. Daily admission entry time starts at noon each day,” according to its website.

Camp Hill Pool

Planning to open: Camp Hill Borough will open the pool on June 19 if Cumberland County enters the “Green Phase.” If the county is not listed as “green” by the June 10 borough council meeting, council members will decide if the pool should open in the “Yellow Phase.”

“Due to our current situation and the limit in pool capacity we are limiting pool usage to Residents ONLY this summer,” Siebert Park Pool officials announced online.

Carlisle Community Pool

Closed: “At this time, the Carlisle Community pool will not open for the season unless the county is in the “green” phase by June 8 given the time it takes to prepare the pool, and hiring of trained, certified lifeguards,” pool officials announced May 27 on Facebook.

Chambersburg Aquatic Center

Closed: “On June 22, Town Council will review information presented and vote to determine whether or not to open the Aquatic Center for the 2020 Season. Meanwhile, we are moving forward with training staff, and preparing the facility for a hopeful opening date in June,” the Chambersburg Recreation Department announced June 2.

The Splash Pads at the Aquatic Center and Mike Waters Park will open as cooling stations starting June 5 from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Families will form a line while practicing social distancing until a designated activity attendant tells them it is their turn to use the splash pad, according to Chambersburg Recreation Department.

Dauphin Pool

Planning to open: “We understand not everyone will be happy with the new rules, but it is something we need to follow in order to open safely for our staff and patrons. The Dauphin Pool is planning to open Friday, June 12th with new restrictions and guidelines. Please check our website daily before coming to the pool for any updates to pool rules,” Dauphin Pool officials wrote online.

The board is continuing to define the new rules and will post them closer to opening day, according to the pool’s website.

Devon Manor Swim Club

Closed: As of June 1, the pool will remain closed for the summer.

“The CDC and DOH requirements for aquatics facilities to operate in the COVID-19 environment are onerous. Monitoring you for mask use, in and out of the water social distancing, and limiting your time at the pool is something that we believe to impractical, costly, and quite honestly not conducive to swimming,” Thaddeus D’Ambrosia, Devon Manor Swim Club president, wrote in a letter online.

Elizabethtown, Willowood Swim Club

Planning to open: “We are so excited to be opening on Monday, June 15th with our new OPERATING HOURS. We have taken enhanced health and safety measures—for you, our guests and employees,” Willowood Swim Club officials announced in a Facebook post on June 7.

Hampden Township Pool

Planning to open: The pool will open June 27 until Sept. 27, as long as there is staff available and no further COVID-19 safety restrictions, according to Hampden Township Parks and Recreation.

“Members will be required to wear a face-covering while visiting the snack bar and when using the restroom. Masks are not required in the water or if stationary in grass area. Pool staff will be required to wear masks, with the exception of in-water rescues and other life-saving procedures,” the website said.

We are continuing to monitor developments and additional information will be made available on our website as soon as possible,” officials wrote on the county’s website.

Latshmere Swim Club

Closed: Latshmere Swim Club officials announced June 4 the pool will not open for summer 2020, citing CDC and Pennsylvania reopening guidelines.

“All these guidelines and regulations puts more on us on our lifeguards and takes away from their primary responsibilities and that is to protect and ensure the safety of our members. Therefore, we were left with little choice but to keep the pool closed for this season,” officials said in a Facebook post.

Lemoyne Borough Swimming Pool

Closed: After a unanimous vote, Lemoyne Borough officials announced June 5 that the pool would not open for the summer 2020 season.

“While it is true that chlorine does kill the virus, it was felt that continued sanitization efforts on hard surfaces (restroom/locker rooms, railings, slides, tables, etc.) would be disruptive to patrons and require extra staff. The occupancy limits of 50 percent during the yellow phase and 75 percent during the green phase also played into Council’s decision,” officials said in a Lemoyne Borough Swimming Pool Facebook post.

Lititz Springs Pool

Planning to open: “Lititz Springs Pool is slated for June 13 opening to Season Pass Holders only through June 30 in order to limit capacity and allow adequate areas for social distancing, non-crowding at pool entrance, frequent communication with patrons, tracking visitation, etc.,” according to the Lititz rec Center’s website.

Marysville Borough Pool

Open: The Marysville Borough Pool opened on June 6 to members only, with updated safety measures and guidelines. Once Perry County enters the “Green Phase” daily admissions will be sold, according to the borough’s website.

Mechanicsburg Area Community Pool

Closed: “It is with much regret that the Borough of Mechanicsburg must announce that the Community Pool will not be opening for the 2020 season. This decision was not made lightly. The pool is not permitted to open under the yellow phase of the Governor’s reopen plan, with no timelines given for the implementation of the green phase. Considering the costly and stringent Safety Guidelines issued by the CDC and the PA Parks and Recreation Society for the operation of the pool, the Borough was left with little choice,” Mechanicsburg Borough officials said.

Middletown Community Pool

Closed: “Last night at the borough council meeting the extremely difficult decision was made that we will not be opening for the 2020 season. This decision was made based on the current social distancing guidelines and the limits on the number of people allowed in a group set by the CDC. We will be using this time to do the necessary repairs and make the pool better than ever for the 2021 season. We will miss seeing all of you day to day and hope to see you on Memorial Day weekend 2021! Stay safe, everyone,” the Middletown Community Pool wrote May 6 in a Facebook post.

Mountain View Swim Club

Planning to open: The Mountain View Swim Club was planning to open June 8 depending on state and federal requirements, according to its website.

Millerstown Pool

Closed: “It is with deep regret that we announce that the Millerstown Community Pool will be closed for the season. Unfortunately, with the uncertainty and guidelines provided as to how to open, we feel there is no other choice for us than to close for the year. Look for many changes and improvements to be made during this time. See you in the Spring of 2021,” Millerstown Pool officials announced May 17 in a Facebook post.
