samasamp.blogspot.com

As a Juneteenth Day flag flies over the Wisconsin state capitol for the first time, some businesses are starting to recognize the holiday.

Friday is Juneteenth Day, marking the day when the last slaves in the South learned that the Civil War was over and they were free. The slaves in Galveston, Texas learned from Union soldiers of their freedom June 19, 1865 — two years after President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation and before the 13th Amendment was ratified in December 1865.

The day is formally recognized and celebrated in 47 states and the District of Columbia. Wisconsin became the 32nd state to recognize Juneteenth in 2009.

Community events marking Juneteenth will be held in Milwaukee.

Here is an updating list of Milwaukee-area businesses that will close early or entirely for Juneteenth.

BMO Harris Bank

All BMO Harris Bank branches will close at noon Friday. Employees will be paid for a full day.

Celesta

Vegan restaurant on Milwaukee's east side Celesta will close Friday "in support and solidarity of this holiday."

The company posted on Instagram saying "We hope you are able to observe this holiday with your family and friends (socially distanced), join marches to demand justice in response to police brutality, take time to educate yourself on issues plaguing our country (as we’ll be doing ourselves), and support Black owned businesses."

Chase Bank

All Chase branches will close at 1 p.m. local time Friday. "Marking Juneteenth is one small measure, but we will continue to join with our neighbors, as well as other business and government leaders to take serious action to do more to address centuries of structural racism," the CEOs wrote in a letter.

Green Bay Packers

The Green Bay Packers will close their operations Friday to observe Juneteenth. It will become an annual observance.

"The Packers will be observing Juneteenth and taking the opportunity to reflect on our own roles and opportunities to further our awareness of racial injustices and inequities and what we can do to affect positive change in our communities," Packers President and CEO Mark Murphy said in a release.

Milwaukee County

Milwaukee County has added June 19 as a floating holiday for employees.
