LITTLE VILLAGE — Police are ordering businesses along Little Village’s historic 26th Street corridor to close Tuesday as violence and looting — but also peaceful protests — continue in parts of the city.
The 10th District police asked local businesses to shut their doors starting at 1 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Little Village Chamber of Commerce. It is not immediately clear why the police are ordering businesses to close.
Break-ins have been reported across the ward, Ald. Michael Rodriguez (22nd) said, particularly along Cicero Avenue south of 47th Street.
The news comes after Little Village neighbors organized to protect businesses from looters.
While most neighbors have organized to support “each other in unimaginable ways,” a few Latino men have indiscriminately targeting Black Chicagoans in the neighborhood, Rodriguez said.
According to leaders in the area, some of the Latino men guarding Little Village businesses are members of the Latin Kings street gang.
“What we have seen has been both remarkable and at the same time extremely upsetting,” Rodriguez wrote in a Facebook post. “People are supporting each other in unimaginable ways putting themselves at times in grave danger. Yet our African American brothers and sisters have been targeted indiscriminately, and that is absolutely unacceptable and tragic.”
The alderman said groups are working together to address issues through marches in North and South Lawndale and a citywide rally for Black-Brown unity at UIC Forum Tuesday night. A rally previously planned at the Little Village arches on 26th Street has been postponed, Rodriguez said.
“Organizers were concerned about safe entry and exit for those coming from outside the community and decided to move the event to a neutral location outside of downtown and make this a citywide event,” he said.
Calls to the Little Village Chamber of Commerce were not immediately returned Tuesday afternoon.
