Target stores in Visalia and Tulare closed early Sunday after protests forced the company to close six stores nationwide in an effort to keep employees safe.

Visalia Target Greatland, Visalia Target North and Tulare Super Target closed at 5 p.m. Sunday "due to the ever changing nature of protest activity" and will reopen 8 a.m. Monday, company officials announced.

"We adjusted hours or closed more than 200 stores over the weekend," a Target spokesperson said.

It's unclear if the early closures will continue into the week.

Clovis store looted

Several people looted a Clovis late Sunday, authorities said.

Around 11 p.m., Clovis police said between 10 and 15 people broke into the store, smashing glass before making off with electronics and alcohol.

The suspects fled before officers arrived. Detectives are analyzing security footage to identify the potential looters.

Clovis and California Highway Patrol officers have increased patrols around other Fresno-area Target locations and retail corridors, according to FOX26.

Targets targeted

After protesters took to the streets last Thursday, a Target store in St. Paul, Minnesota, became the poster child for the escalating riot in the city.

With similar situations across the country happening, and the safety of employees in mind, Target announced Sunday it would close six locations in the U.S. until further notice.

No violent protests or looting have happened in Tulare County with the exception of a Jeep knocking down two protesters on Mooney Boulevard Saturday afternoon after protesters threw water bottles at the vehicle and obstructed traffic, Visalia Police Chief Jason Salazar said.

No arrests were made.

The Minneapolis-based company said in a statement that it was heartbroken by the murder of George Floyd and the pain his death is causing communities across the country
