The Western & Southern Open announced Wednesday that CEO and tournament director Andre Silva is stepping down this month after accepting a position out of tennis.

Silva joined the W&S Open in 2016 from the player representation agency TEAM8. Prior to that, he spent 14 years at the ATP, with roles that included chief player officer and tournament director of the ATP Tour Finals in London.

“Andre has been a great leader for our organization and that has been particularly evident in the past few weeks as he delayed his departure to work through the many possible scenarios for our 2020 tournament with us and our partners,” said Katie Haas, Chief Operating Officer of the Western & Southern Open. “We wish him the best for his future and know he will remain among our biggest supporters.”

Silva's reportedly headed to professional golf as the tournament director for The Players Championship, according to the Sports Business Journal

“This was a very difficult decision and it is certainly with mixed emotions that I am leaving the sport of tennis to pursue this new opportunity,” Silva said in a press release. “I would like to thank the leadership of the USTA and all our partners locally, in particular at Western & Southern, for their support during my time here. In addition, I am grateful to the tournament staff and volunteers for all their passionate work on this event and I am eager to see the tradition of excellence continue here in Cincinnati.”

This news comes shortly after it was reported that the W&S Open could be moving from Mason to New York this summer to be played as a doubleheader with the U.S. Open as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

A final decision on where the tournament will be held is expected by mid-June.

The W&S Open is scheduled to take place Aug. 15-23 at the Lindner Family Tennis Center. The ATP and WTA have suspended play since March 12 due to COVID-19.

J. Wayne Richmond, USTA Managing Director of Major Events, will serve as interim CEO & tournament director for 2020. Following the conclusion of this year’s event, the USTA will conduct a search for a new tournament director.
