If the second round was foreshadowing the weekend at the 2020 U.S. Open, then we are in for a wild third round on Saturday. Following an opening round in which 21 players were under par, only three were in the 60s on Friday, and the tournament will not get easier over the final 36 holes as Moving Day gets underway.
The final pairing on Saturday -- Patrick Reed and Bryson DeChambeau -- will provide all kinds of theatrics, but Round 3 could be about everything but that twosome in the lead up to their tee time. There are 21 players within six of the lead, and as Tiger Woods (who missed the cut) said on Friday evening, anyone who made the weekend has to feel like they have a chance to win. That's what happens at difficult courses where everyone in the field is backing up. You can tell yourself that level par will push you to the top of the board, and it's true. The question for guys like Justin Thomas (-2), Hideki Matsuyama (E), Jon Rahm (+1), Dustin Johnson (+3) and Rory McIlroy (+3) is whether they can go out and do it. We'll find out.
