9/23/20, 4:28 PM update: While we’d hoped to be able to open NC12 today, the ocean had other plans. The road will remain closed between the Basnight Bridge and Rodanthe, as well as on Ocracoke between the Pony Pens and the Ferry Terminal until at least noontime Thursday.

Dare County EM 9/23/20, 4:57 PM: Due to the uncertain road conditions on HatterasIsland, residential trash collection scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 24 for Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras has been cancelled. The next collection for these areas will be Monday, Sept 28.

9/23/2020 11:48 a.m. update: Here’s a look at what we’re up against today on Ocracoke, and it’s much the same on Hatteras. We’re making progress but still seeing tides busting through protective berms. At this point, we are still working to open the highway today, but it will now be 6 p.m. at the earliest.

9/23/2020 7:30 a.m. update: Good morning! Highway 12 remains CLOSED between the Basnight Bridge and Rodanthe, as well as on Ocracoke between the Pony Pens and the Ferry Terminal. Our crews are on the scene and making progress at both locations and we’re seeing calmer conditions. We are making every effort to reopen the highway to motorists sometime this afternoon. We will update as soon as there is any new information.

9/21/2020 1:30 PM update from Dare County: Trash collection again rescheduled for Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo and Avon. Due to delays in reopening of N.C. Highway 12 on Hatteras Island, trash collection for the villages of Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo and Avon will now take place on Friday, Sept. 25. Thursday’s collection for Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras Village remains unchanged.

9/21/ 11:30 a.m. update: Unfortunately, the high tide coming in now is severely hampering efforts to reopen Highway 12 on Hatteras and Ocracoke today. Crews continue working to clear sand and water off the road, but we have to push the reopening time back to 2 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. We apologize for the delay.

9/22/20, 7:24 AM NC12 remains CLOSED between the Basnight Bridge and Rodanthe as well as on Ocracoke between the Pony Pens and the Ferry Terminal. In addition, there are areas of ocean overwash in sections of Avon, Buxton, and Hatteras. Last night’s high tide was another rough one, but NCDOT crews are working this morning with the goal of reopening NC12 at some point today. Much will depend on today’s high tide, which occurs at 12:14 p.m. We will update with new information when we have some.
