LAPEER COUNTY, MI -- Officials at Almont Community Schools have made the decision to temporarily close the district’s high school for in-person instruction after a student who tested positive for COVID-19 was in the building.

In a letter to parents and guardians issued Sunday, Sept. 27, Superintendent William Kalmar notes the district became aware of the student’s positive test on Saturday and has since been working with the Lapeer County Health Department to address the situation.

“Because we had a student with COVID-19 present at Almont High School last week, we are regretfully closing the high school for all in-person instruction until October 12, 2020," said Kalmar in his letter.

Kalmar added that given the potential exposure to many teachers and students, it’s very difficult to use contract tracing alone.

“As of now we have no evidence that this student has given COVID-19 to any other Almont High School employees or students, but, due to the strict protocols associated with mitigating the spread of COVID-19, this closure is required,” he said in the letter.

The district will be contacting some students and staff members who will be required to quarantine for 14 days, if they are considered close contacts of the COVID-19 positive student.

Orchard Primary School and Almont Middle School will remain open, with the siblings of high school students allowed to continue in-person attendance unless they develop COVID-19 symptoms.

Anyone with questions about the situation is asked to call or email the superintendent at bkalmar@almontschools.org.

The closure marks the second mid-Michigan school district in recent days to close a building over COVID-19 concerns.

Frankenmuth School District’s List Elementary School will close for three days starting Monday, Sept. 28 after multiple staff members were potentially exposed to COVID-19, according to a letter from the district’s superintendent.

The Saginaw County Health Department directed the school to close from Monday through Wednesday, Sept. 30, during which time staff will be quarantined and workers will disinfect and clean exposed areas, according to Superintendent Adele Martin. The health department doesn’t believe the exposures have led to any cases among students, Martin’s letter states.
