DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke volleyball team opened the 2020 season with a 3-2 (25-19, 23-25, 25-8, 23-25, 15-12) victory over NC State on Wednesday evening in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
With the victory, the Blue Devils record their first win of the fall campaign and are 1-0 overall and in conference play.
Boasted by two players with double-digit kills, the Blue Devils took the first, third and fifth sets on their way to victory.
Duke was led by junior Lily Cooper and sophomore Gracie Johnson with 11 kills each as Johnson recorded her first double-double of the year with 10 digs. Junior Alex Springate dished 20 assists while sophomore Camille Nazor had 11.
Defensively, Duke featured four in addition to Johnson with double-digit digs, headlined by junior Mackenzie Cole (19), Springate (16) and senior Payton Schwantz (16). Duke was stellar at the net with 28 total team blocks, led by sophomore Lizzie Fleming with eight, junior Ade Owokoniran with six and Cooper with five. The Blue Devils limited the Wolfpack offense to just a .078 hitting percentage for the match.
The Blue Devils used eight total team blocks in the first set to take the early lead on the Wolfpack as Fleming quickly racked up four, including one solo block. Fleming notched her second solo block of the evening in the third set as rookie Georgia Stavrinides came off the bench to pick up her first collegiate block with teammate Owokoniran.
The fifth and final set featured five tied scores and one lead change as Duke was able to pull out the win. Cooper collected two blocks, connecting with Johnson as Johnson also picked up her 11th kill of the match.
Duke was able to use its nine service aces to cause nine reception errors on the Wolfpack as Cole recorded four, followed by Owokoniran with three.
The Wolfpack were led by Melissa Evans with 14 kills, followed by Hartley Myers (12) and Pam Chukwujekwu (11).
The Blue Devils will close out action against the Wolfpack Saturday, Sept. 26 with a 6:30 p.m. matchup versus NC State on ACC Network Extra.
