DURHAM, N.C. – Duke field hockey is grateful and excited to start its 2020 campaign, beginning with a pair of games on the road at Louisville. The Blue Devils were slated to open the season last weekend, but their two games at Syracuse were postponed.
Head coach Pam Bustin's squad will first compete in a conference contest on Saturday, Sept. 26 at 1 p.m. and follow with a non-conference game on Sunday, Sept. 27 at 1:30 p.m.
Saturday's game will be streamed on ACC Network Extra while Sunday's game will be the first nationally televised game of the season, airing on ACC Network. Access to ACCN is determined by your TV provider and can be streamed through the ESPN app.
Historically, Duke is 35-12-2 in season openers and 8-1 under Bustin.
HISTORY WITH THE CARDINALS
Prior to coaching at Duke, Bustin spent 13 years at Louisville where she put together a 153-119 record. Saturday's game will be the 17th meeting between the two programs as the Blue Devils hold the edge in the all-time series, leading 11-5.
SCOUTING LOUISVILLE
Louisville was picked to finish fifth in the preseason poll by the ACC head coaches, receiving 25 votes. The 2019 team put together a 16-6 overall record while going 3-3- in conference action and making an NCAA quarterfinals appearance. Head coach Justine Sowry had one Cardinal selected to the Preseason All-ACC Team in senior Mercedes Pastor. Pastor received the honor for the second straight season after earning All-America honors as a junior. The Cardinals return nine starters and 19 letterwinners from the 2019 campaign.
PRESEASON NOTES
Senior back Lexi Davidson represented the Blue Devils on the Preseason All-ACC Team after starting all 21 contests as a junior. Davidson was an integral part to Duke's backline that recorded seven shutouts in 2019 and the seventh-best goals against average in the country.
Following a vote by the league's head coaches, Bustin's squad was predicted to finish fourth in the ACC after receiving 26 votes.
WELCOME BACK
Duke has 13 letterwinners returning from the 2019 roster, including seven from the starting lineup. Junior Leah Crouse and sophomore Hannah Miller paced the Blue Devils' offense last season with 11 goals apiece. Crouse finished the season with 26 points and an All-ACC honor while Miller earned All-South Region recognition. Junior forwards Olivia Sahaydak and Noor van de Laar also return for the Blue Devils, scoring six and four goals, respectively.
Senior Lily Posternak and Josie Varney return to the midfield for the Blue Devils, starting 21 and 19 contests last season, respectively. Alongside Davidson on the backline is Grace Kim who earned a spot in the starting lineup on 20 occasions.
FRESH FACES
Bustin added seven newcomers to her 2020 roster with six freshmen and a graduate student. Duke's freshmen include Darcy Bourne, Alayna Burns, Barb Civitella, Morgan Fletcher, Piper Hampsch and Shea Tatara while the Blue Devil graduate student is Eva Nunnink. Another addition to the program is volunteer assistant Jess Jecko. Jecko, a 2016 Syracuse graduate, plays for the U.S. Women's National Team and will primarily assist the goalkeepers.
CAPTAINS CALL
Seniors Davidson and Posternak were chosen to captain the 2020 team. Both veteran players, Davidson has played in 48 matches and Posternak has made 64 career appearances.
BUSTIN NEARS 300
Heading into her 24th season as a head coach, Bustin holds a 289-190 career record. Bustin's first head coaching job was at Hofstra before spending 13 years at Louisville. Since joining the Blue Devils in 2011, Bustin has put together a 127-62 ledger and is the second winningest coach in program history behind Jacki Silar (162).
