The Cameron Peak Fire remained at 15% contained and 102,596 acres on Friday, although fire managers said Friday night that several other spots along the perimeter are close to being considered contained.

Planning Operations trainee Cory Carlson said in a Facebook Live presentation that the eastern edge of the fire is considered contained, the Colo. 14 corridor is close to being considered contained, and from Buckhorn Road west along the south edge of the fire is close to being contained.

The problem area in the “thumb” in the northern part of the fire area, where fire was active on Friday, he said.

Two hot shot crews worked the area on Friday and two more are expected to arrive by the end of the weekend, he said.

It’s a rocky, steep area, difficult for firefighters to access, Carlson said. “It’s going to be a challenge.”

More than 200,000 gallons of retardant and water has been delivered to the area over the last few days, he added.

Incident commander Dave Gesser said 970 personnel are continuing to work the fire, but two helicopters that had been helping were sent Friday to a new fire that broke out in Wyoming.

But they were able to bring in more single-engine fixed wing aircraft to deliver retardant, he said.

Small planes can get lower to the ground and be more precise in that work, he said. “That’s why we went that way.”

On Saturday, winds out of the southeast are expected to reach 15 to 20 mph, which could push the fire in the thumb area to the northeast, Carlson said. But cloud cover and possible precipitation also are forecast, which could help firefighters, he said.

The containment figure means that adequate fire line has been established along 15% of the 237-mile fire perimeter.

Firefighters are continuing to patrol areas that are considered contained or close to being contained to make sure the fire does not kick back up, and the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office issued a statement that it also is continuing to provide security patrols in the evacuation areas and on the fire perimeter.

The Sheriff’s Office also reported two mandatory evacuation areas were downgraded to voluntary evacuation, and two voluntary evacuation areas were lifted.

The U.S. Forest Service reported Friday that due to the increased containment and decrease in fire activity on some parts of the Canyon Lakes Ranger District of the Roosevelt National Forest, some areas previously closed are opening. The general area now closed is all National Forest System lands west of County Road 67J and County Road 27; east of the Colorado State Forest State Park; south of County Road 80C; and north of Rocky Mountain National Park.
