NEW YORK -- Frances Tiafoe is the last American man in the US Open singles field -- and he's into the fourth round at Flushing Meadows for the first time.
The 22-year-old who grew up in Maryland advanced Saturday by beating Marton Fucsovics of Hungary 6-2, 6-3, 6-2.
"I'm not satisfied ... I plan to keep going," the 82nd-ranked Tiafoe said.
The only other time he made it past the third round in 17 Grand Slam appearances was when he got to the quarterfinals at the 2019 Australian Open.
To get to the quarterfinals now, he'll need to beat No. 3 seed Daniil Medvedev, last year's runner-up at the US Open. They met in the first round of the Australian Open in January, with Medvedev winning.
In other matches, No. 6 Matteo Berrettini, a semifinalist a year ago, moved on, as did No. 2 Dominic Thiem, No. 10 Andrey Rublev, No. 15 Felix Auger-Aliassime, No. 21 Alex de Minaur and Vasek Pospisil, who has been in the news lately because he teamed up with Novak Djokovic to set up a new association to represent players.
Pospisil eliminated No. 8 Roberto Bautista Agut 7-5, 2-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 and next faces another five-set winner, de Minaur, who defeated No. 11 Karen Khachanov 6-4, 0-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.
Thiem advanced by beating No. 31 Marin Cilic 6-2, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
Thiem lost only eight points on his first serve and saved 7 of 8 break points.
The Austrian, who will next face Auger-Aliassime, is seeking his first Grand Slam title. He's 0-3 in finals in major events.
