The summer months may be in the rearview, but great white sharks are still very much swimming in Massachusetts waters.
A great white was spotted off Race Point Beach in Provincetown over the weekend, and researchers with the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy took a moment to remind beachgoers to be aware of the ocean predators — and how close they can get to shore.
“This is a good example and reminder of how close to shore white sharks can get,” the nonprofit wrote, sharing photos of the shark swimming just beyond where waves were breaking on the beach.
The warning follows another issued on Friday by the conservancy, reminding anyone heading to Massachusetts coastal areas that the peak time for shark activity off the Bay State stretches from August through October.
As the fall season approaches, we would like to remind everyone that white sharks are still off of the Cape Cod coastline. Based on tagging data, peak white shark activity is in August, September, and October. Remember to be shark smart. pic.twitter.com/OTstPtbn8l

Dozens of shark sightings and detections were reported through Sharktivity, the app from the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy that tracks shark movements and sightings, over the holiday weekend, according to the interactive map.
