Speakeasy Kava’s existing location is at 12514 Starkey Road in Largo, FL.

A popular kava bar in Largo will soon open an outpost on Central Avenue in St. Petersburg’s Grand Central District. Speakeasy Kava is expected to serve the South Pacific Island drink, along with its partner, kratom, at 2101 Central Avenue.

Kava is an herbal beverage that is consumed socially for its calming and euphoric properties.

Over the last few years, the kava community in St. Petersburg has blossomed into one of the largest in the nation. So much so that in 2018 the Tampa Bay Times declared St. Petersburg the “kava capital of the continental United States.

Most kava bars are anchored by their sense of community and Speakeasy Kava is no exception. Shortly after opening in Largo in November 2017, the bar quickly became a local hangout spot. With a 1920’s themed interior, Speakeasy Kava serves a variety of mood-enhancing teas and relaxing kava cocktails.

If you’re craving a caffeine boost they’ll also serve organic Lazy Goat pour-over coffee, which is sourced from Tallahassee, FL and Mother Kumbacha drinks, which are brewed locally.

Speakeasy Kava has an extensive tea menu including herbal infusion drinks like the Lady Luna which features red clover flower, nettle leaf, raspberry leaf, rose petals, and jasmine flowers. The herbal drink is ready to serve after steeping for 10-20 minutes.

The bar will be located at the corner of Central Avenue and 21st Street in a space that was most recently a field office for Michael Bloomberg’s short-lived presidential campaign.

Before that it was home to Tan Central, a tanning salon and smoothie bar. Neighbors to Speakeasy Kava will include Wendy's Closet on Central, (swah-rey), On Pointe Dance Wear & More, and Lucky Star Salon.

Speakeasy Kava expects to open its Central Avenue outpost later this year. It has yet to be determined if, like the Largo location, the St. Petersburg bar will be open 24/7.

Joe Esposito at KW Commercial represented the landlord in the lease negotiations.

Once open, Speakeasy Kave will join a number of other kava bars in the greater downtown St. Pete area including: Grassroots Kava House at 957 Central Avenue, Steep Station at 2901 Central Avenue, InVision Creative Cafe at 275 16th Street North, and Bula Kafe at 2500 5th Avenue North.
