Surly Brewing Will Close Beer Hall November 2 - Eater Twin Cities

Surly Brewing will close its beer hall on November 2. The decision comes days after its hospitality employees approached management with the intent to unionize. In an announcement today, Surly acknowledged the “not ideal” timing saying, in part, “Since the start of the pandemic, Beer Hall revenues are down 82 percent compared with the same period last year.” Usually, at this time of year, even during the Minnesota State Fair when most businesses see a dip in attendance, the Surly Beer Hall would consistently have hours long waits to get a seat inside the perpetually crowded room.

The industry-leading brewery was the first to push legislation for Minnesota to allow taprooms for customers to consume their product on site. The piece of legislation was commonly known as the Surly bill, which was signed into law in 2011, leading to a wave of taprooms opening all over the metro area and beyond.

The brewery then took its time constructing a massive brewery in an industrial part of Minneapolis with an expansive green space, beer hall stacked with long tables for communal seating, production space, room for private events, and a fine dining restaurant upstairs. The fine dining restaurant, Brewer’s Table, would close shortly after receiving widespread national attention, including a James Beard nomination for its chef. Surly replaced that restaurant with a New Haven-style pizza eatery that has been serving as a part of the take away beer hall menu Surly has attempted to maintain.

Surly’s hospitality employees’ attempt to unionize comes on the heels of Tattersall’s employees’ recent success in organizing, making that the first taproom to have hospitality workers represented by a union.
